Captain America digest (Scope/Sereo)
The following is a brief review of the quality of this new digest. The film has a stereo sound track that I can't review because of problems with my stereo receiver; the sound through my projector receiver, however, sounded just fine.
The editing of this digest is very good. I have never seen the full lenghth movie so I can say with all honesty that the digest has an understandable comprehensive story line that is enjoyable for those, like myself, who have not seen the movie.
The color in the digest is typical of a lot of the films coming from the German lab. There is a slight greenish tint. It is not at all distracting and all of the other colors do come out very well. The print quality is very sharp...Very Sharp.
I am very picky and reserve an A+ rating for those rare one in a thousand prints that look so perfect you think that you are watching a pristine 35mm print. That being said, I would give the print quality an A which is giving this film very high marks.
I am very statisfied with the purchase and recommend it highly.
The digest is well over 600' so would not fit on a 600' reel. It comes split on two 400' reels.
I will write a more detailed review in the near future that will appear in "The Reel Image"

Thanks Guy, that's very encouraging. It really is quite something that this is well-edited to actually tell the story. I don't think that has been attempted since Derann's 1980s releases!

If the greenish tint is noticeable and it obviously is since you have never seen the full length feature, I would say its slightly distracting since you were able to notice it. I am guessing its because the acetate stock is slightly yellowish and the Lab has to compensate for it. A shame that its there but fortunately its slight. Are editing splices visible? Is the Paramount Logo there?

This is Steve Osborne's release (The Reel Image). You need to subscribe to his magazine and film lists. He has many new releases. The Reel Image, 2520 Blackhawk Rd. Kettering, Ohio 45420. 937-296 9036.
As for me, I noticed no green tint. A really good job all around. I did not see the feature and for me there were a couple of things that were not explained clearly in the digest. Steve is also selling a small reel of the ending credit sequence and the preview of the AVENGERS ..which was attached to the original Capt.A. feature.

And I got my copy of the Super 8mm CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 X 600 color sound here are the screen shots film is much sharper it's FANTASTIC!!!! Here is a picture of the box I made for the film .

Yes it is a very nice print it is a fantastic print , the running time is 32 minutes with 2 X 600 with one the first reel up to 400 and the other 600 full filled to the capacity. And it works as having the full movie. I saw the movie over 10 times and it has all the best parts keeping the story for those who never saw it. What a great digest best I have ever seen. No
drop out noticeable in the soundtrack and no evidence on screen of the edits. It is very smooth and has a nice flow. Its perfecto! So don't wait buy it now ! Nuff Said!

Great to see how commendable this release is in every respect - I wasn't sure at first if it would be my cup of tea but the screenshots showing such a selection of spectacular scenes are helping to 'sell' it to me!
These German prints do seem to occupy significantly more space on spools than average acetate prints. It could be partly due to the good quality and relatively thick striping.

As for the thick stock, I think our Laksmi will soon wear it down to polyestar thickness by the amount of times he's watching it.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Hugh at least I will save money from going to the cinema to watch it. I saw it many times when it first came out. I have it on Blu-ray and have not watched it . Any way the film stock is strong and no scratches I can see yet wow! Hey Lee that Chinon projector High Def Cinemascope lens looks great my Elmo is blushing

Yes..the stripe on my print is nice and thick...so the film doesn't wind as compactly as other prints. Very good stereo sound ....and the sound stripe also protects against scratching and cinch marks.

Sound is very good, picture is super sharp, and the colors are fantastic.
Now if we only had cover art and a clamshell...!
Seriously though this is a great print and it really is exciting to have a newer film come out. And the editing job was very well done. If you didn't see the film you could see this and still understand what was happening. Hayley Atwell looks great on Super 8 I might add.

Zechariah - it's good to hear that the polyester stock is returning, which should have the edge in terms of colour. But does the list indicate whether polyester prints will be stereo, as I believe the last time the lab were printing on polyester, the prints only had the main stripe. Perhaps that has changed, though.

I just recieved Steve Osbournes new lists and in there he states that the new "Captian America" prints that be struck will be on polyester stock, which is thinner, (which might mean that it just might fit on one reel!), and having dealt with the german film lab and having struck our own "Saturday Morning Madness" print on both they're polyester and Acetate film stocks, the polyester (which I believe is the brand new "Kodak Vision" super 8 film stock), is definitely FAR superior in color saturation and color correctness, as well as less grain!
I am actuallt thinking about getting polyester print of this! I HATE that yellowish acetate stock, but the Kodak Vision stock is a very superior super 8 stock!

Here's EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. If I have a chance I will watch RAIDERS and take pics. I had Lance re-record ESB and it sounds awesome. I need to do the same for RAIDERS as the sound is not that great.

Both ESB and Raiders are on acetate but is early printing so no yellowing of the base. I paid about $400+ for Raiders and ESB was part of a package deal.

Someone had asked about those prints from thye German lab Laksmi.
Though my ESB has the yellowed acetate, the colors are still superb and it almost looks like as the german lab started running into this yellowing acetate, they re-colortimed the prints ahead of time, as in this case, the ywllowing of the film stock doesn't affect the color of ESB. Gloriously on the spot color and sharpness, very light grain.

I've got my copy and it is really edited well. Action on top of action but a really good job on condensing the story. I spliced the two parts together and slapped my scope "Good Will To Men" on the front of it.

I wondered if anyone who ordered a copy and had to hang on for the second or a later batch has now received it? I was particularly wondering if anyone who has a polyester print can comment on the colour and overall quality and whether they have been able to stripe the polyester balance stripe for stereo sound?
And any news on the other release that Steve Osborne decided to do that includes end credits and the trailer to the other film at the end?

I'm not sure how many are out there. Steve told me that there was a batch of 8 that came in recently and that mine was included in the batch after that. I'm sending him a note soon that I'd like to add the end credits reel to my order so we'll see.
The batch before was 4-5? And this came out almost a year ago as I understand it. So about 13 in the last three months. And it's been out for nearly a year AND this doesn't include CHC orders.
It would be cool to hear a collective report from Phil and Steve by the end of the year to find out how many prints are in the wild.

I was told that the lab or the mail lost the original material the credits section was supposed to have been made from. Steve said unless they find it, there won't be an end credit section.

Polyester is really strong and will not tear, plus it can only be spliced using tape not cement. And of course its thinner.

Well, I actually bought my Captain America digest some months ago, but just FINALLY watched it last night. Here is my review:
Captain America (digest), 800 feet/32 minutes, color/scope, sound/stereo.
Let me start by saying, I have NOT seen the full-feature of this movie, so I can't say for certain what, if any, key scenes have been deleted. What I can say is that this is one PROFESSIONAL EDITING JOB! The quality of editing reminds me of the excellent Ken & Universal digests of the late 70's (Alien, Jaws, etc). This digest moves very smoothly, and never feels rushed. The sound editing is spot-on as well. I can certainly recommend this digest to any collector who likes these newer super hero movies, or just want new material on super 8.
Here's a few screen shots (like we don't have enough on this thread already )
Captain America
These screen shots seem to pick up the grain at an exagerated level, but the grain is not as noticable when watching on the big screen. Still, it would be nice if these newer prints could be made on the same stock Derann used, as I think it will have a slightly more natural look.
With that said, this is an excellent quality release, and looks and feels like it was printed straight from a negative. Sharp edges to the images, and booming sound.
I will be looking for the end credit sequence when it arrives!

I was a bit bemused about the mono stripe situation until I contacted el labo re printing and discovered they could only paste stripe main stripe on poly stock hence mono prints and twin stripe (stereo) on acetate. If you need stereo the type of stock will dictate if you get mono sound or stereo. It would appear the last operatives in the world to offer stereo paste striping on commercial prints would have been Derann and oh what a loss to see those stereo paste stripers hit the rubbish tip!We won’t see stereo Paste striped poly prints again so grab those acetate prints when you can.

Though I like the occasional stereo print, I'm quite used to a good mono soundtrack and when it comes to great color and mono, or semi-great color and yellowed acetate, I'd rather go with the polyester ...
Besides, I have unfortunately found that even a brand new acetate print, can easily snap! I had just bought a print of Titanic on super 8 scope, acetate. I was rewinding the print and snapped on me and I had to splice the darned thing, right after buying it. Grrrr!

Osi. Yes I also find the new (possibly very old stock) acetate prints a bit brittle which hints at aged materials perhaps, maybe this is where the yellow tint comes into it? Very nice to see these new prints become available still and like many now we do enjoy them here. I’ll be projecting some at our film fair next month as well on the Xenon.

I just received my print of CAPTAIN AMERICA from THE REEL IMAGE. It is from the latest run of stereo acetate prints....
Excellent job by Steve Osborne and everyone involved in making this very repeatable action film available to collectors! It looks and sounds great!
I spliced on my SUPER 8 trailer at the beginning, and it makes a perfect, full 800' reel

Oh the thrill of a new print flying through the front door!
My own print has arrived and my goodness looks smashing in Cinemascope. I timed this new release at 24fps total duration starting at flash frame 3 33:58:14 so it has a decent running time and as I say suits the wide format really well looking sharp. My copy was printed after the lab printer overhaul, the print is flawless and a delight to view.

I received my print yesterday and had to watch it twice, was briliant it has the best sound l have heard on S8 and the picture quality spot on.
This would have to be one of the most enjoyable digests I've seen.

You will have the same print as me Jason and isn’t it amazing quality! Personally I would praise Steve to the limit for a very fine and I am sure overseen quality release the like we have not seen a 2X600 reel for so many a year. I’ll be looking forward to a few local collectors calling over the weekend to view it in sprawling scope and Stereo with this stereo track probably the best I have heard for a off the shelf Stereo release.
This release will be remembered by collectors for some time...

In film prints case, can a later batch be better compared to the previous batch (in terms of sharpness, color balance, etc)?
In LP/vinyl, first pressing is always said better.

Well the Lab/ super 8 gear has had a refit and Phil S told me he thought reprints of stuff they did before are noticeably improved on.

Winbert Really we will not know until we project two prints side by side but from what I have here I would say the new prints are perfect since the printer strip down and overhaul. Next time I run CA I’ll take some shots and post them but that’s not really a good test posted in low resolution on here. We should remember also our suppliers do these releases for love more than anything with virtually zero margin so I’m keen to support them. We are getting these releases at an estimated 32 pence a foot, with sound, spool and box which is a great deal less than 50 ft of bog standard super 8 camera film without processing. With a steady trickle of brand new super 8 releases we do have time to save up and treat ourselves just a little..

WOW! Just received a polyestar print and it is fantastic. The quality of the picture is just outstanding. It is sharp with lots of detail. In some of Derann's prints, such as Pearl Harbor, there is a lot of contrast but not in this reel. Mine was on a very full 600 foot reel. And the editing was great. I felt the same way I did after I saw the 3x400 foot version of Star Trek. It made the film much better especially for repeat performances. If you had your doubts about buying this don't hesitate. Great job Steve O!

Larry - I wondered what you thought of the sound quality? A collector recently mentioned comparing the sound on an acetate trailer (not Captain America) with a polyester version of the same trailer and deciding the acetate was better, so I wondered if the sound is still impressive on the CA polyester version, despite being mono?

I think it would be impossible to find a source of non-low fade stock nowadays, even if someone wanted it! I've always assumed that any batches from the pre-low fade era got used by about 1985. LPP was in use by the end of 1982 but even after it became the norm for Derann releases there was a fairly brief era when - if you were unlucky - you might buy a release on some Eastman stock that the lab must have been using up.

I'm guessing the acetate prints are on old ex frozen stock which even back in the day was not uncommon to be used and printed this way. Its all a case of supply and cost but you are right that the acetate striped stock holds excellent stereo sound recording and probably for me anyway the best track I've got to stripe for years. The Bond reel also took a superb track although as those who have recorded in stereo will know the edit is different than the disc in one place so a bit of a challenge as everything is fast paced.
True Lies is on top of my list!

Dominique, the stock used is not reversal, but print film, a peculiar type of negative, especially because of its very low speed (=fine grain). And, based on the fact nowadays we do know what happens if a lab doesn't use proper chemical, proper rinse, proper care etc, I feel confident today's new prints will last longer. And of course if duly cared for, the very first signs of fade will be delayed even further.

Being a bit of a realist and in the 50+ bracket my own concerns about colour fading of new prints are only moderate ones. The main thing is to actually project the prints onto a screen and enjoy them during my three score years and ten. Likewise I would say that with modern chemistry and processing we do have a hope of them lasting and they certainly look smashing on a big cinematic screen. The prospect of True Lies on 8 is quite a wonderful prospect for me.
Hats off to Steve and Phil for a top job!

I haven't heard any evidence that the colour-holding properties of modern filmstocks has been revised down fron the 75 years that used to be quoted, so I'm only aware of one Forum member who may have to worry about a print of Captain America not looking quite so good when he's in his 90s!

Yes, I think we need to worry more about having any kind of projector that still works in 10, 20 30 years. It may be ironic....we have non fade, great looking prints....and nothing to run them on.

I thought it was interesting to see on The Reel Image sales list, I got a couple days ago, that he still had acetate prints for sale of Captain America for $224. Might not be a bad time to get one before they are all poly, and more expensive.
