Disney had shorts for sale at the parks like the haunted mansion, jungle cruise, etc. they were 3-minute reels in color silent does anybody know if these were sold in 16mm?

A few months ago I missed a reel about Epcot on Ebay. It was apparently a film introducing the park, part of an educationnal package.

Ok, that doesn't really answer your question, does it? Sorry.
I don't know if Disney printed 16mm reels of their attraction shorts.

(I've got most of the official Super 8 200 footers from DL, WDW and Universal Studios. Still looking for the Haunted Mansion 50 footer, though. I found 2x400ft reels of WDW home movies, at a flea market, in glorious kodachrome.)

Hi to all,

In all my years of collecting, I have never seen Disney 16mm for sale.
Either through the Select Film Library which sold films in NYC, or in the Disney souvineer shops that are located throughout the Disney Parks.

In 1973, Alice Tully Hall's- Lincoln Center in NYC, hosted a 50th year retrospective. The exhibition was by advanced ticket sales, and many of the features, cartoon shorts and documentaries which had not been showcased theatrically in years was given its proper treatment. It was a glorious summer film festival and all of the 35mm films were in mint shape.

As you exited the hall, there was an area that sold all of the Disney prepackaged 8mm extracts in Super 8 Sound at list price. 16mm prints were not available for sale.

However in years past, when the Disney Channel's TV programming was not a part of Basic Cable Televison service, and only exclusive to channel subscribers, they included extended footage to the contents which is seen in the souvineer prints.

It was wonderful.

P.S. Back in 1973, I was aghast in hearing Donald Duck's dialog as he cleaned the main spring in Clock Cleaners. Back in 1973, I was certain that he said the 'F' word.

But I also have know of a friend that visited Thornhill Entertainment, and through the speakers, you can hear that it sounds like 'F-ing' [Eek!]

The 'ing' sound is definitely heard. [Eek!]

Hi Jim,

I am a collector of the Disney ride and park films too. I have never seen any in 16mm, but I'm sure Disney would have made other shorts in 16mm of the rides and parks if only for internal/promotional or TV use. I have always found the quality of the Disney Super 8 films excellent. If I enjoyed the ride I'd buy the Super 8 and the Viewmaster!

I've got an IB blue track Disney 16mm "Clock Cleaners" [purchased via Big Reel a few years back].
In the diatribe between the mainspring and Donald . . . maybe it's the power of suggestion . . . but everyone I've shown the print to easily agrees Donald quacked "F*** You!" to the clock spring. After which the clockspring says, "May I?"

Wal Mart thought so too and banned the "Fun on the Job" video.
(the DVDs have since been re-dubbed).

Another all time classic Disney on 16MM is the Disney Silly Symphony, "The Grasshopper and the Ants". In this toon the lazy grasshopper proudly sings, "Oh the World Owes Me a Living" . . but the grasshopper's voice and laugh are in the voice of Goofy. [Pinto Colvig].

The grasshopper's theme song, voiced by Pinto Colvig, "The World Owes Me a Living" went on to become Goofy's theme song also originally voiced by Colvig.

Mike, I misread the article . . . the infamous Donald explitive is unchanged in the DVD:
" . . . worthy of interest is the inclusion of the unexpurgated version of the Mickey Mouse/Donald Duck/Goofy cartoon Clock Cleaners, which features Donald Duck, according to some members of the moral minority, saying "F*** you". The redubbed version was present on the DVD release of The Great Mouse Detective, and now hearing the unmolested version, I must admit that it does sound like "F*** you" . . ."

Hey Mike, you haven't lost your mind . . I get the same "take" from my print.

Hi Jean-Marc Toussaint I just picked up the 50'Haunted Mansion on ebay for 15.50 although i have seen it go higher then the seller practically gave me two more disney titles duplicates of the the "pirates of the carribean" new in the packages as they were sold then, if you need one otherwise they go on the auction block soon.

15 bucks was a good price for the haunted mansion film, I saw it soar to more than 50 once.

And I just noticed something odd... The reel is silent, but the film is striped!!!!

I was curious about these headliners which had been
mentioned in this thread regarding the
Haunted Mansion and Pirates which are featured
at the Disney Parks.

Are these headliners from Disneyland
or the Disney World Park?

Is there any additional footage on these headliners
than what has been placed on the 200 foot reel?

The Pirates ride in Disneyland, has different touches here
and there, then what is found
in Disney World in Orlando Florida.

Incidentally, the California Pirates attraction is longer
with two dips, than in the Orlando Park.

Last but not least, my disappointment in the 200' reel, is that it does not
feature the speaking Mr. Lincoln as featured in the Hall of Presidents. [Frown]

Was there ever a souvenir reel that had Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln
from Disneyland? [Confused]

Michael, there are headliners for both parks, interior shots rely on common elements from both California and Florida versions. Since the ride buildings are different, the exterior shots are different.
On the 200ft reels ("Attraction Highlights") you will find shorter versions of the headliners but with different shots.
There are two shots of Lincoln on the "A Day at Disneyland" reel using the post-1967 to pre-1969 footage. I don't think there's a headliner for this attraction.

Bringing back this topic to the 16mm field: I just missed the "central" part of the Circarama 360 film "America the Beautiful" on Ebay... Oh well...

This is very interesting regarding Disney in the parks footage.
The Day at Disneyland is one reel that I do not have,
and hope to acquire one day.

I sometimes notice Disneyland USA
on the Derann lists. Are you familiar
with the contents as well?

Michael, I just sold two of the Disney park reels on Ebay. I still have a spare French (silent) edition of the pre-1969 200 footer (A Day at Disneyland/Une Journee a Disneyland - the one that features about one second and a half of the Lincoln show) as well as a couple of others for sale of you're interested...

When I said "just missed", I meant that I've been outbid. No regrets (and I wasn't answering the post while the auction was going on...)

The Disneyland reel that you sometimes see popping on Derann's list is a Pathe Pictorial shot in the late sixties. Some really good exterior views, no inside shots of the rides. It's on the blueish side and got some lab marks (I guess the source material wasn't top notch).

Jean-Marc, many of the Disney shorts were sold brand new as silent, but contained mag tracks. It always puzzled me as it would have cost them to stripe them. I thought perhaps the tracks were not up to standard and they wiped them and sold them silent??? I bought several of mine brand new so can say for sure they were never sound.

Of the theme park Disneys I have, about a third would be silent with mag tracks.

It's not just the sound, it's a 12mb mp4 film, as I left the low-res video to help you start the recording in sync.

Jim and Michael: I just found a catalogue of Disney 16mm releases dating from 1973. Guess what? There's a 22 minutes reels called "The Magic of Disneyland". It's out there... Somewhere... Let's hunt it down , gentlemen!

From the 1930's thru the 60's, Hollywood Film Enterprises Inc. under a license from Disney, released both 8mm and 16mm excerpts from Disney cartoons for toy projectors and general home movie use. Most of these were B/W and silent, though in the 50's about a dozen b/w titles were offered in 16mm sound; and by the 60's a number were available in 8mm Eastmancolor. HFE also released 8mm films of Disneyland attractions. Their license was terminated when Disney decided to go into the home movie business for themselves.

If you look very (very) carefully at the listing of Classic Home Cinema you will find some Walt Disney shorts on 16mm.

I should clarify that the dozen or so Disney cartoons released in 16mm sound versions by Hollywood Films were all uniformly edited to about 175 feet (roughly 4:45 running time) and were also re-titled. Prints of these are not too hard to find; titles include Mickey Plays Santa Claus, Movie Star Mickey, Donald Duck The Mechanic, Gold Rush Mickey, Mickey and the Giant, Mickey and the Lilliputians, All American Mickey, Mickey Gives a Party, Mickey Saves The Air Mail, Mickey's Trick Horse, Mickey's Exciting Picnic, Robinson Crusoe Mickey, Mickey and Simon Legree (last two are heavy on racial caricatures) and Christmas Toy Shop (a Silly Symphony.)
