There are service manuals for the 1500 series on the internet. There is a whole section in the service manual on the autoload system and its adjustments. In the meantime, you can probably just hold the lever forward and manually close the threading system, until the film is threaded through. In the manual, the three causes listed for the system not locking are:
1. Autothread lever binding
2. Release spring disengaged or broken.
3. Eccentric bushing improperly adjusted.
Of course, the manual has pictures and part numbers, and procedures, to help with the repair. Good luck.

If you go to the bottom of the "Manuals" section, they have 16mm projectors. The 1500 and 2500 series are pretty much the same.
