This little cinema where I have 16mm filmshowings on a regular basis has gotten hold of a Eiki 6100, which needs some love and care. One of the problems is that the silver coating of the mirror is flaking. What could be done about this, apart from finding a new mirror, which might be difficult and expensive? Silver mirror paint, does it exist?

Don't paint it. The coating is a dichoic material that passes infrared back and visible forward. If you do anything to it, it'll probably produce too much heat at the aperture.

See how much visual impact is there from the problem. Then contact any local theatre supply source to find out about a service where the mirror can be stripped and re-coated with the right materials. Since this should be the same as large xenon lamphouses, any commercial source should be able to handle it.

Price is another matter though and a replacement might be cheaper. Check the Eiki offices to see if they can supply a replacment spare.

Last time I heard, Eiki still had some of those mirrors but was charging in the range of US $1200 for them. You should be able to get it recoated for about 25% of that.
