Does most 16mm projectors have optical mono sound? How are the movies, comes in stereo or not?

If movies are stereo, what projector is a good one for best possible sound on 16mm?

My current projector is a Bauer P7 Synchro

Thanks

Yes Vidar. Most 16mm projectors only have mono sound. The best of the theatrical projectors, such as Eiki-EX9000 or Elmo LX-2200, have the ability to read stereo sound. However, like you said most 16mm prints have mono soundtrack. I am not too sure of non theatrical projectors that have the ability to read stereo, though I would think that the Eiki-ex series, like the 350 or 550, have stereo readers. If you are very clever with electronics, you can modify the sound head and processor to give you projector the ability to read stereo prints.

Thanks, I am not able to do this mod, but it's nice to know for sure how things work.

I won't need to stress with finding a stereo 16mm projector as I most likely don't have any stereo sound films

Does anyone have such a thing? Even later-vintage rental prints weren't generally stereo, right? I suppose the projectors wouldn't have stereo readers if nobody wanted them, but still...

Split photo diode, stereo pre amp into surround sound kit is excellent on a Bell & Howeel TQ3. Good little project for winter.

It's a shame stereo didn't take off in relation to 16mm, but there are a small number of 1980s prints with stereo tracks. There's a thread somewhere with a lot of information on this, probably on http://16mmfilmtalk.com/

However, I think you may have to be a member over there to access this.

I did that earlier today actually ... Looked cool, but since there's so little movies and probably incredibly hard to find, I'll stick with the mono for now :-)

Thanks for the input
