The Bell & Howell 26xx series were badged as TQM. One assumes that TQ is Tungsten Quartz, but what about the M?

Every B+H I've seen of the late models is badged TQ3, but the one I bought from Phil Sheard a few months ago is labelled TQM. The only obvious differences from the TQ3s I used to use is that the speed change switch is moved to the front, under the lamp house, and it doesn't have an inching knob. Oh, and there's a switch on the back to take the lamp to full power rather than an extra position on the rotary knob as usual. Though I have no idea what the M is for!

I am sure that "M" stands for "Machine" so it becomes "Tungsten Quartz Machine". I am sure, pretty sure....may be ! [Big Grin]

If we're in a guessing game, how about MODEL?

I have just found in my files an instruction book for the TQM. It's dated 1985. It covers three models. 2685. 2692. 2698. They were made in the USA for the British market and ran on a mains frequency of 50HZ, with a voltage range of 198 - 264.

They only had one tone control, and at the back had a switch for lamp brightness. The sound/silent speed change was by a sliding lever which moved the drive belt.

The 2685 seems to be the intro model, whereas the 2692 had a still device (not animation) and a DIN socket for connection to an external amplifier. The 2698 had the latter details, and was magnetic playback in addition to its optical facility.

So, perhaps "M" means modified?

From two new Ebay listings of the TQM 2698 and 2678 the following can be seen from the pictures:

TQM Specialist 2698
Made in the USA
Auto loading
Magnetic or optical playback
Still picture

TQM Specialist 2678
Same except no still picture and slot loading instead of auto

Note seller has swapped the pictures so that 2678 appears under the 2698 and vice versa.
