I received a film a while back that by surprise it came on cores. At the time I did not have a split reel and needed to get the film transferred to reels. I remembered reading on the forum that someone had used cardboard to create a make-shift split reel. Here is a tutorial with the steps I did which succeeded. I have since bought a split reel...but this method worked as an interim solution.

1. You will need rewinds. You might have to make modifications based on how your rewinds are designed. I used the rewinds with the long post and the clip on the end. It will be a little more challenging with the shorter posts...but not impossible.

2. I used a 1600 ft. reel as a template to draw circles onto cardboard and cut out the 2 circles. If your reel is bigger that use that size as your template. Punch a small hole in the center of the circle. Not too big a hole...you want it to fit tight on the rewind post.

3. Sandwich the core between the two card boards. The core will not be centered...but it doesn't matter. Be careful handling the film on the core...especially if it's not wound very tightly.

4. If your rewinds look like mine (long post with clip fastener) The clip will hold the outer cardboard pretty tight against the core. I also added a paper clip which made it a even tighter. If your rewinds don't have the latch on the end...you will have to devise another method to secure the outer cardboard. Something that you can perhaps wedge in to tighten it against the rewind post or somebody can just hold it pushing the cardboard against the core while you rewind.

5. Most films that come on cores will have tails out so you should just have to wind it onto the reel from the core one time.

Janice - I love you for posting this. Not too long ago I lost an entire 1600' of film that I bought on a core. It was a catastrophe. I ended up binning it. I was so upset. It just became an utter mess trying to move it from a core to a reel. Now I know EXACTLY what to do next time. Thank you, Janice! You're a God-Send!

Great idea Janice! If you don`t handle films on cores too often, this DIY option would work in a pinch.

Thanks Brad...this does work in a pinch. I recommend a split reel if you can afford one, but this will do the trick and my core transferred without a hitch the first time. I think having a second person would be an added benefit to keep pressure on the outer cardboard. However I did it alone so it can be done.
