This has been bugging me for far too long
so let's get it straightened out...
Who knows how to get the pound sign on a US keyboard? Also, how do you get the German umlauts (a, o, u with "dots" above them, as well as the beta-looking sign which denotes 'ss' or 'sz' in Germany)?

Jan, I use Windows XP but it should still be very similar for whatever version of windows.
Click on the start button, select Accessories, then system tools then select character map. You will find
Everything you need there.

THANKS!!!
Especially to Andreas for the useful website.
I use Windows XP too, there isn't even anything like Character Map on my computer, must've uninstalled it, but then I'd prefer to just hit a combination of keys anyway instead of launching a separate app. Appreciate the help though
(Must confess I'm slightly embarrassed seeing as that I could have answered my own question with a simple Google search... guess I didn't think of it this one time.

Why is it when I brought this up not to long ago everyone thought it was funny?

Chip, humour trends come and go. I guess back then it was pounding on the keyboard!

I didn't know Chip brought it up before
Must've missed it.
Chip, if you're online right now why not chat me up on AIM

Andreas,
That's good reference for the unconventional characters.
Jan, for me if inserting foreign currencies I usually used commonly known abbreviation such as GBP or USD or EUR...much easier.
cheers

For Apple users, the alternate keyboard characters are found under the
'Key Caps' Application.
It's very easy.

Here in the UK my keyboard has the £ on the 3 with shift.
$ is on shift 4.
Now the 4 also has the euro symbol, but I do not know how to make it do this euro symbol.

David, press the CTRL key & ALT key together then press number 4.

Sorry Ctrl and Alt and then 4 gets me nothing.

You must have the support built into your OS for that key combo to work. I dont think Win 98 gives that support. I'm not too sure about ME either but do know that XP,2000 & 2003 will support the Euro symbol.
