Lately I have been running the trailer for the remake. It really looks good, and so far I can make out Richard Dreyfuss, and Kurt Russell, a good cast and special effects. Watching the trailer made me think about the original film and seeing it in the cinema a long long time ago, can anyone remember the hit song The Morning After, and who sang it. The Poseidon Adventure was one of the first Super8 digests I bought back in the 70s sold it long ago, pity, and scince its been almost 30yrs I am curious to here how those prints have stood the passage of time. hopefully ok [Smile]

Graham,

Shortly after I saw the new "Poseidon" I had a strong desire to watch the Ken Films digest again, which I had always liked. Ken did a great job with the set up, the wave hitting, the Poseidon turning over and the decision to go up to the "bottom" of the ship. Unfortunately there was hardly any time left so all they could fit in was Roddy McDowell falling off a ladder and Gene Hackman being covered by water. Then they cut straight to the rescue. My print, darn it, has warmed up quite a bit.

As for the new version, there's a jaw dropping opening shot, an uninterrupted long take where the camera starts underwater, surfaces to a wide shot of the ship, flies in close to the ship to see Josh Lucas jogging, follows him overhead through a passageway, pulls back to a wider shot and flies around to the other side of the ship where we rejoin Mr. Lucas on the top deck as he jogs up to a rail. Then we come in for a tight close-up! Amazing. And it's also the best part of the film. "Poseidon" isn't awful, the CGI effects are ok (I think the old school effects from the original are better) but the cast has a lousy script to work with and it's hard to care who will survive.

There's a copy of the KEN digest on eBay right now, but i'll bet it has pinked or gone totally red, but you never know...the seller claims not to know. Anyway Doug, i'm sorry to see your opinion of the new version, i'm a big fan of Kurt Russell. Went to see THE DA VINCI CODE today...and enjoyed it VERY much...especially Paul Bettany's strange performance! A far cry from his role in MASTER & COMMANDER... [Wink]

Hi Graham, Maureen McGovern sang the title song and it was a big hit here. I still have my 400ft digest....and a 200ft as well I think. A great little cut down from memory. I have not watched it for several years so I should get them out and hope they have not faded too much.

Sorry to hear about your Super8 print. Ken films did a good job of the digest. I guess a lot of those early films have gone that way. The remake is due out here next week and its disappointing to here about the script. I no it sounds corny but it would have been nice for them to include The Morning After at the end for old times sake, it was a hit record here at the time, and the radio stations played it lots, even after 30yrs or so I can still clearly remember it [Roll Eyes]

Hi all,

I looking forward, when the remake opens in Germany.
I really like the classic movie from 1972. My print has still very good colors. It seems to be a "contact print" and not an "optical print (oxberry)". I have had also a contact print of One Million Years B.C. years ago, before I got the 4x400 Walton release.
This "One Million... BC" was also a fantastic print in color and sharpness.

Hi Nick,

don´t know the source. Got the film few months ago with a bulky collection I bought from a german seller.

Here the scan of (orange) card box with artwork and reel.
The source seems british because of "colour" instead of "color".

I have had also a optical printed version few months ago, which have had some picture movements, which supports the tendency, me however let feel seasick. [Wink]

Last one was in a german clamshell box.

The photos look good the box cover brings back memories, I watched the remake last week and enjoyed it, the original in many ways was better in particular the ending when they reached Shaft Alley , this is really a special effects film the scene of the ship being struck and capsizing is stunning the film is in scope and suits it, the digital sound is great, the subwoofer in the cinema where I work was very effective you could feel it in the projection room . This remake did make me appreciate the original more. The two other Wolfgang Peterson films I like are "The NeverEnding Story" which is one of my favourite Super8 scope prints, another film "Das Boot" one of best submarine films ever would make a brilliant Super 8 release.

There was a 3x400' German 8mm release of "Das Boot", and I remember that a collector had added English sound and a reel was shown at an early BFCC convention (one of the Holborn Library events I believe), it was really good quality too, I'd contact Andreas perhaps he can locate a copy, although it will most probably have the original German track.
