Does anyone know what is the current holder of this record. Im sure Harold Bailey would have found this a challenge with standard 8.
For those that dont know Harold Bailey or 'Bailey the light' as he was known was famous in the cine world for showing Standard 8 at the NFT using a spruced up standard 8 projector.

Ah, but it is only the largest 35mm screen. Where is the largest 70mm screen cinema in the world? Crumbs we are doing a quiz now.
The 30.670 metre screen took 20 blokes to fit it. I heard that Graham was going to help but he was playing with his G1200 again!
This is a good web site to look at

This morning I heard the 30.6 metre screen at Sylvia Park has made the Guiness Book of Records. One day I must take a look at this multiplex.

"Where is the largest 70mm screen cinema in the world?"
Just guessing, but wouldn´t Le Grand REX in Paris be a likely candidate for the largest cinema screen (if not widest)?
Best Wishes

There is a 31 meter wide indoor screen at Village Knox Multiplex here in Melbourne. Whilst it is equipped for 70mm it only runs 35mm. It runs a 10,000 watt xenon lamp with refridgerated water cooled gate and projector head.
There are many drive-in screens here that are much larger than 30.6 meters in width. The Village Coburg drive-in screen 1 here in Melbourne is 33 meters wide. These massive screens are awesome to see, but a little smaller is always better for resolution and light!
It is impossible to light a screen over 28 meters wide at 16 footlamberts with 35mm. That is where 70mm and IMAX come into their own.

Hello David!
10,000 watt xenon lamp in a 35 mm projector! That must be VERY near the edge of what you can do with the 35mm format?
Actually, here in Stockholm there are several large screens (nowhere near as large as those you describe) and those cinemas are all capable of showing 70mm, but as we rarely ever get 70mm prints anymore, and 35mm films ARE being projected on these large screens, I for one feel that they´re really pushing it a bit there... Brightness isn´t a problem, but a 1,85 non-anamorphic 35mm frame enlarged some 8 - 10 metres high, I feel you´re beginning to get problems we recognize from super 8; grain, image weave, somewhat fuzzy focus, etc.
By the way, I truly respect the people who run and own the cinemas here in town, it can´t all be fun and games: Being a parent, I see quite a few childrens movies with my daughter, and invariably, when the credits start to roll after the film, all the kids run onstage and start poking on the screen! Curiosity I guess, but the people in the booth may be tearing their hair (those screens must cost a fortune!)
Best wishes
Lars

Give the little blighters a bloody good hiding! Oh, you're not allowed to do that any longer! And that is why youngsters are running amok everywhere and there is nothing that can be done about it.

John,
I 100% agree with you.

Finally got to see this big screen.Rather disappointing, because it is mounted in an atmosphereless theatre....I saw,"This is New Zealand",a 1970s promo, great flick,3 frames wide, but it seemed a bit "stretched" on this screen. Trev

Hi Trevor
I have been hearing that the screen is just to big for 35mm, a film like "This Is New Zealand" would have been ideal on 70mm, watched it at the Rialto during the film festival, their screen I thought was to small, it seemed to loose impact, however next year and for all the non-believers Super8 will definitely be on the programme.
Graham.
PS, Trevor can you remember the music that was used at both the start and end of "This Is New Zealand"?,
