Maybe I should say 'international' films, since what is considered a foreign film to me, ISN'T to a person living in that country.
That said, what is your favorite film from another country? Mine has ALWAYS been LA STRADA. Giulietta Massina was incredible in it. That face!!!! And Anthony Quinn, well, what can I say about him?
I have a 99 and 44/100% complete 16mm print, which ends just as Zampano walks onto a darkened beach. I only wish it had the complete ending.
Maybe DERANN will do a series on classic 'foreign' films. I'd definitely vote for this one

Without a doubt, 'Cinema Paradiso' is my all time favourite foreign film.

I agree on that one, Paul, very good.
I would put right up there, "Cyrano De Bergerac" starring Gerard Depardieu.
... and who can forget "Das Boot", magnificent!!
Ironically, my favorite foreign Super 8 print is, of all things, "Hooper" (Burt Reynolds), as it has japanese subtitles on the bottom, but English language.
Hee hee, I cheat.

My best foreign film this year is SPIDERMAN 3.
Yeah it does have a foreign language for me
(just kidding friends, Frank has noted that before)
cheers

Years ago we accidentally sat in the wrong cinema started watching what I thought was a trailer with subtitles turned out to be the feature, the film was "Pelle The Conqueror" this was back in the 1980s I think it was from Sweden good story and acting, but what impressed me was the way the film was directed wasen't rushed like the usual Hollywood fast editing, the last part of the film in particular "with some long shots" showing the cold, the snow, and isolation of it all was beatifully shot.

Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" has long been one of my favorites. This past year saw the release of some wonderful films including "Pan's Labyrinth" from Mexico and the German film "The Lives of Others".

"Betty Blue", the original, not the over long directors cut. A simply wonderful immersive film that is really a roller coaster ride for the emotions. I would love to see a nice print of it again, it really is a see-in-the-cinema film.

"Bicycle Theives" by Di Sica (I think) and "Kanal" by Andrej Wajda and "Kermis In De Regen" (this one from Holland) director unknown to me.These doreign films float my boat.
