read in the sunday mail or the mirror some guy brought a can of 35mm nitrate film for £3.20 on ebay it was a rare charlie chaplin film made in 1916 had an offer for it of £900.000 and said im not in any hurry to sell could be worth over £1.000.000 now thats what i call an ebay bargain.eddie. Sometimes the opposite had happened to me. Some movies were sold for SO HIGH PRICES.

And the the real value (and condition...) were absolutely so poor [Confused]

Lots (not all of them, thanks God!) of Italian collectors really specialize in doing this. Buying for 1, using, using, using. And then re-selling for 5 (and stating NEAR MINT AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION) [Roll Eyes]

The guy is a fool. ZAPPED is a curiosity, but it only contains snippets of Chaplin from other films. If someone really did offer him that much for the film, he should have taken it.

All this story really does is make anybody who finds an old nitrate film think that they have discovered a fortune. In reality, they have found some thing that is culturally important, but not really worth that much. Other than archives, there are very few people in the world that still collect nitrate film.

From my own experience of buying 35mm off eBay, "Mystery reels" always end up being porn.

I bought a couple of 35mm nitrate reels on eBay several years ago. They turned out to be an abridgement of an early Tom Mix feature. Although the film A CHILD OF THE PRARIE had been sold on 8mm and 16mm, I ended up donating the film to the Library of Congress since they did not have have a copy.
