Hi,

I have come across several vintage projectors - Ampro is an example - where the spool arms are operated by external wires. These wires are often in shocking condition. Can anything be substituted for these wires please?

I'm guessing these are the spring wire belts that were used by many makers for years (B&H, Ampro, Victor, Moviemite, etc).

In many cases there are replacements available which you can find on ebay for the more popular projectors (B&H, RCA). Since the belt allowed a degree of slip you might have success in some designs and not others by replacing them with urtheane belting of the proper diameter.

For example, the Kodak Pagent and AV series take-up belts are fabric and are designed to slip so a urtheane belt in this application would not be desireable.

Many thanks - this is useful. I am also wondering how crucial the take-up spool actually is, since it is the sprockets at the film gate which wind the film through at a consistent speed. So I am wondering if the fact that the spool wires slip every now and then is not as serious as it might seem?
