Name one of the most outstanding films you saw that was produced in the last 20 years....and if you want to elaborate...why was it so?

As a Beatles fan, I was recently directed towards the film "I am Sam" starring Sean Penn and Michelle Pfeiffer. There are several Beatles songs throughout the movie. The synopsis is that the main character Sam has a mental age of seven, yet somehow manages to end up looking after his daughter after the mother runs out on him. The courts try to take the daughter away from Sam as they feel it is in her best interests, and Michelle pfeiffer, playing a lawyer, grudgingly tries to help Sam in his battle to keep her. A terrific film and one I can heartily recommend.

Hi Thomas, one of the most entertaining films for me, of the last
20 years would be the remake of "Godzilla",it was a bubblegum
film that was pure entertainment, didn't have any messages or
hidden meanings.I actually enjoyed this film far more than the
"Jurassic Park" series,it was worth the price of admission just
for Jean Reno doing the Elvis impersonation at the checkpoint.
Totally silly but great fun, with the added bonus of a very cool
looking monster.

On a more serious note,I must say that I enjoy any film made by
Michael Moore, the last one I viewed had him revealing the
unfair system in place whereby ordinary folks lost their homes
to the Banks, and the plight of one poor man who had to empty
his family home of his belongings for a pitance the Bank had
allowed for doing the job, actually moved me to tears.May they
roast in hell.

Yeah, right, how do I measure favorite? It's not by "most desired" as, though I have been looking for a good color print of "Grizzly Adams" for seven years, it's not my favorite.
Top five or so in my collection, that I rank as "favorites", (all features, and all scope!)
1. STAR WARS
2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 1977
3. Alien
4. Poltergeist
5. Die Hard

Funny Passquale!
Did you know that the sequel "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" was written by none other than the film critic, Roger Ebert?
Good thing he stuck to being critic, eh?

yes I did OZ and your right. It was aweful. I just seem to escape into VOTD. I love Barbara parkins in it and Patti Duke was terrific. The scenes in the New England winter really grab me for some reason. maybe because they were filmed here.

ever see the film The Ice Storm? I think that takes place in a bitter New England winter.

The Insider 1999. How Michael Mann who usually has violent themes to his films has an impressive, intelligent drama with this one.

Something I noticed was that in my list, nothing of note was produced after 2006. I would say the only exception is 'Moonrise Kingdom' from Wes Anderson released earlier this year.
However, there is another film of his that tops my list of personal favorites. Within the last 20 years, I most remembered:
Country Boys (2006)
Rushmore (1998)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Gummo (1997)
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Krzysztof Kieślowski's "Red/White/Blue" Trilogy (1994)
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
JFK (1991)
The Crying Game (1992)
Honorable mentions would be: The Ice Storm (1992) and The Big Lebowski (1998), a film I did not really like at first but, have grown to love.
In case anyone may want to know my all time favorites, this list is always changing. Here are the first dozen that come to mind, in no particular order, simply years released:
The Chaplin Mutuals (1917)
Variety (1925)
Grand Illusion (1937)
Citizen Kane (1941)
The Red Shoes (1948)
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The Godfather (1972)
Taxi Driver (1976)
Annie Hall (1977)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Hairspray (1988)
The Decalogue (1988)
Honorable mentions for me in this category would be way to long but I would like to add that the Bray Studios released some of the most entertaining short films ever. And oh yeah...King Kong would have made it onto my list but have only seen it a couple of times, not yet an "all time favorite".
