I just bought a brand new Gateway SX series HD desktop. Now, I have never opened it, never tinkered with it. All I've done is upload a few programs onto the computer and none of them relate to the DVD drive ...

the drivers for my DVD drive on the computer are completely missing. In fact, while the DVD drive has power, (it opens closes and loads up DVD's) the desktop doesn't even acknowledge the existence of the DVD drive. I called Gateway and they, for a "one time fee" will come to my house to dowload drivers into my computer. BLOODY HELL! I just bought this thing new, and the DVD dirvers just up and disappear?

I have a 13 year old pentium 4 Dell that the DVD driver has never failed on me, nor has the drivers ever come up missing? Why the hell would that happen?!

Therefore I ask you fine folks for help ...

The model of DVD RAM drive is this ...

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH70N

... Can anybody get ahold of these drivers and (if the file size is small enough) e-mail them to me, or give me a link to where I can download them?

I thank you for your time.

If you just bought this, shouldn't it be under warranty?

You proberly didn't get a Windows disc, but if you made of system restore disc you may be able to use it. Boot from CD and look for repair or something like that. It should have any missing drivers and put them back.

Did you have them to start with? Just a thought. Thinking about it not sure if Windows has dvd drivers as standard.

Almost sounds like the DVD connector isn't all connected ... Try pressing the DVD door firmly in and see if there's a little slip ... Then it might be okay and the drivers would re-install automatically

If the computer came with Windows 8, that version of Windows does not come with the software to play DVDs. If the drive isn't working at all then yes, the driver(s) for it are missing in action. Try playing a audio CD with the drive. If it plays then it simply means that you need a software program to playback DVDs.

If there's no directories on any disks, I don't think it's the drivers, as windows native drivers would at least be able to handle the file systems. It really sounds hardware to me, but if you do get a directory, it might be drivers. In device manager, is there any ! before any devices?

Also keep in mind that the DVD-device might be hidden while empty due to some strange settings:

I'm going to try that! ThanX Janice. I highly doubt that the drivers just disappeared, it's just that they can't be accseessed, well see.

SUCCESS!! I had to do about four times but I finally got my DVD drive in my new computer back up and running!

1. I attempted system restore. Because of the virus protection I had, a file that was needed was not accesible.

2. I got rid of Norton protection. Tried again. Same error message.

3. Got rid of Avast protection as well. This time when I was to attempt it, it stated that the WIN DVD program would be deleted.

4. When I restarted the computer this time, without the WIN DVD, the DVD worked again.

Apparantly, the WIN DVD I uploaded, turned off "Power DVD" and the drivers must havce been linked to the Power DVD.

Needless to say, SUCCESS!!

Osi, are you in Windows XP, 7, or 8?

Im in Windows 8 which, quite frankly, I don't enjoy as much as windows Vista or even XP. Too many damned unecessary features and "windows all over it.

Oh, by the way,

I've look all over, but I can't seem to get the windows Media player to give me all those nice psycedelic imagery that is the hallmark of the media player, whgen you play music.

All i get is this wall-paper that shows some rediculous hedphones that occasionally changes a color hear and there. BORING!! I want my halucinagenic colors back!

Congratulations you've got it working. One of Bill Gates undocumented features of windows.

Are you running 2 virus checkers? You should only run 1 they can cause conflicts and miss a virus.

If it happens again with any program. If you right click on the file and open with you should see all the programs hat will open that file.

Every time I put new program they nearly always take over the running of the files that the original in your case power dvd with the new win dvd.

Great when the work OK real sods when they play up.
