GRRRRRRR... The thing I hate the most about ebay is the fact that anytime an auction gets cancelled (and I'm talking about ones that you have bid on), it just vanishes, as if it was never there in the first place. I don't understand how an auction that has bids can just be cancelled "willy-nilly" without any explanation to the potential buyers...I had bid on an UFA Dawn of the Dead and now it has simply vanished and I have no explanation why. This has happened to me roughly 10-15 times this year so far... A bunch were from some guy that was listing rare old cinema things like a 35mm print of Edison's Frankenstein, etc and I would bid on stuff and then "poof" it would disappear and then show up again, bid on it , "poof" disappear.... There should be some accountability to the bidders of why it got cancelled, etc, and the seller should not be able to cancel the auctions once people are bidding..

That it vanishes doesn't bother me, but pulling auctions with bids on shouldn't be allowed, unless the item turns out to be defective. And they should keep track of all those pulling auctions. I missed a few auctions due to this and really annoyed me

only 2 weeks ago I won a camcorder. I paid within a minute of the auction end, and within 5 minutes the seller had relisted it as a buy it now. later, He refunded my money with a little note saying "sorry, the item was broken". I remonstrated by email only to be told that he was selling for his wife and she had hoped for more money. Because he has refunded the money, there seems no way to report his dodgy dealings as each time I try to open a case, I am told that Paypal has advised that a case can not be opened. Last night, Ebay informed me that the seller had requested to cabcel the transaction as I had bid in error!

Don't cancel the transaction. This way the seller will not get ebay fees refunded. Then you can report the buyer. Look under customer service for "Report Buyer".

Pat we are grumbling about sellers that are cancelling on us innocent buyers...

I've been seeing bid cancellations more and more lately. I had someone cancel after I won the item and paid for it because they didn't estimate the shipping properly. He did refund my money. I was able to leave bad feedback, I said I never received the item.
One thing that I have noticed when I'm selling stuff is people contacting me and offering to pay a certain price for the item before the auction has ended. Often the price is less than what I end up getting. I never end an auction for an offer like that, it seems kind of shady and you don't have any recourse through Ebay if something goes wrong with the transaction.

And it's actually not allowed to cancel it once there's a bid, is it?

Dino, I discovered the expression "willy nilly" in your post. Thanks, it is a nice one !

Hi! I sell on eBay occasionally, and on the rare occasions I have had to cancel an auction with bids on it (item had got damaged), it is not an easy process. Part of which however, is a detail explanation as to why. But this never seems to get passed onto the bidders and as the OP states, the auction just disappears into the ether....
But then again, eBay is a world unto itself!
