Very friendly event this one.
I remember buying a reel of brand new Star Trek trailers from Uncle Phil many years ago at Farnworth.
I wish I could have made it to more over the years as it is literally up the road from here, but work always intervenes...darn.
Will try to pop along this year.

will you be attending farnworth Andrew or are you working
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 04, 2016, 02:17 PM:
I am working David as it stands. The only good news I've seen so far from this year's planner, is I am at least off for my 50th. Off to London now that week. )
Typically, I'm never off on my birthday, so there's one plus I suppose!

well looks like I won the £10.00 bet as I said I bet you don't go looks like I was right
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 04, 2016, 04:42 PM:
More than likely I'm afraid David.
I would be very shocked to find out someone placed money on me being anywhere for certain on any given day apart from work.
Even my own immediate family wouldn't place that bet David.

just out of curiosity Andrew . when was the last film fair/event you attended.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 05, 2016, 03:38 AM:
The Derann open days Paul.

wow thats going back a bit. great days they were. and yet the atmosphere is still alive and well at todays events. now the blackpool dates are confirmed for this year. november 18th 19th 20th you have a great chance to arrange something for this one if you want to go.

Myself, and everyone else Paul.
I am not seeking any other equipment nowadays other than sync equipment including motor controller boards.
I am coming very close now to closing out my Disney collection. The ones I still don't have, I've been searching globally on an almost daily basis.
If I thought I'd stumble over any of these prints in A1 near mint condition, I'd look to getting someone to swap with me even if I'm rostered in work.
As you say Paul, I have more than enough time to plan ahead to make this a possibility.
The bottom line is, for what I now seek from this hobby, most of it is either tightly held on to, or now almost doesn't even exist in the condition I want it in and at price point I am willing to pay.
If I can't find it in five years of global searches, what chance do you think I may have of finding it at Farnworth or even Blackpool Paul?
I'd love it if there was any realistic chance, but somehow,I doubt it now the years roll by after Deranns closure.
Please please, correct me if you feel I may possibly be wrong with this one Paul.
Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on January 05, 2016, 07:14 AM:
most film fairs blackpool.farnworth. ealing etc. are attended by collectors not just to find that elusive title on film but the occasion of meeting up with fellow collectors. actually speaking face to face with each other. enjoying film shows and yes finding and buying a film or two, or even more. there are great atmospheres at these events always. and thats what and why people make the effort to attend. if that kind of event does not interest you fair enough.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 05, 2016, 07:36 AM:
It does very much Paul, but as a priority in an otherwise already brimming schedule of things I involve myself in.... at work, at home and out and about, it would feature well down on my absolute "must do" list of priorities.
That is especially, if it meant having to take shift swaps and then paying the hours back straight after already working a 62.5hr week.
Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on January 05, 2016, 07:44 AM:
thats a great shame Andrew. because i feel that if you attended one you would be eager for the next. like in america those that attend CINESEA enjoy the get together so much they eagerly look forward to the next gathering.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 05, 2016, 07:51 AM:
I am certain I would Paul, no doubt about that!
At the end of the day, I'm not 20 anymore nor am I anywhere near retirement yet. I have neither the stamina to work in my job for 80 plus hours in one solid block, or the luxury of having time all to myself anytime soon by virtue of retirement.
Come the day and cometh the hour, I am sure I will be opening the doors and setting up the tables one day, God willing.
I have total respect and admiration for all those who both arrange and attend these events in these times and still manage to make them a great success.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on January 05, 2016, 11:18 AM:
I've had some really spectacular finds at CineSea, but honestly if I came home without finding anything it would still be worth my while.
-as far as the effort to go it's actually better to go than not.
A couple of years ago my new job was going really badly: to the point where I was actually talking to my old boss about returning there.
I went from 30 years building nothing bigger than a phone booth to this sprawling research complex with a couple of hundred miles of cabling to organize.
-A fish out of water is one thing: I was a fish in a frying pan!
With nerves still jangling I went to CineSea that weekend: I relaxed, I enjoyed, I came home.
-and things were better after that and still are.
I'm not saying a weekend of films, friends and fun helped me figure out how to wire an electron accelerator, but I am saying I returned to work that Monday a lot better off than if I stayed at the house and stewed in my own juices all weekend.
-A lot of people trivialize hobbies, but they can actually be healthy!
Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on January 05, 2016, 11:25 AM:
Steve i agree with everything you said.
Posted by Nigel Higgins (Member # 4312) on January 05, 2016, 12:21 PM:
Andrew, the thing is if you dont go you will never know ,all kinds of films are know to turn up at these events and at prices you wouldn't believe possible i mean cheaper than you might think .who knows someone could be selling those derann disneys .out of interest what titles do you need for the full set ?
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 05, 2016, 12:41 PM:
Thanks Nigel. The two I still seek are WFRR and Peter Pan.
The others I have in the pipeline already, all being well.
Peter Pan is not so unusual to find, but ones I've had chance to buy, have not lived up to expectation on each occasion.
For either of these, I'd be looking for very near mint.
Posted by Steve Klare (Member # 12) on January 05, 2016, 12:49 PM:
That's one of the joys of these events: you can check it out before cash has exchanged hands.
-last time I saw "Grease" feature length laying on the table. Lou Franchetti let me take it up to the room, project it on the (fortunately white) refrigerator, and decide if I liked it. (I did!)
Discovering it is basically scrap (with or without the "s") after you've paid for it and had it shipped a couple of time zones is a whole different kettle of fish!
Posted by Mike Newell (Member # 23) on January 05, 2016, 02:08 PM:
For years I didn't go to conventions but when I did go I found it ito be a unique and rewarding experience. Some people go for the atmosphere and meeting fellow collectors some go to spend or sell in big terms. You will always see films and equipment brought there that you will never see on lists or the Internet. Blackpool in particular was always an Aladdin cave for discoveries. I know some collectors like Eddy Goodwin and Adrian Winchester have been going every year for 30 years.
Posted by Nigel Higgins (Member # 4312) on January 05, 2016, 02:28 PM:
I will be taking a projector and anyone who wants to view any of the films im selling before buying will be more than wellcome mostly 16mm but i will be taking a few jems from my collection that i need to sell, and andrew that wfrr is so rare on 8mm hope you find it one day .
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 05, 2016, 03:03 PM:
Me too Nigel Thanks. Quite a few are now, but I've been lucky lately in some of the rarest just happening to surface.
I agree fully with the excellent points Steve makes here just above. It is a risk having film shipped around the globe without seeing it first in the flesh. But what I will say, is some of my finest films have come by this method.
In almost all cases, I have found the people who were willing to help me obtain these from thousands of miles away, some of nicest, most helpful and most trustworthy people I have come across in the hobby.
Many I now regard and refer to as simply a true friend.
I have much to be thankful to these people for.
Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on January 05, 2016, 03:06 PM:
i will say one thing Andrew.if i knew what i know now i wish i had a £100 bet on the one David Guest had made.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 05, 2016, 03:27 PM:
David or yourself would always make pots of money from bets like this Paul.
I am only surprised anyone was banking on me being there or any other event (including the football) these days.
I might surprise myself though one of these days, and just find the timing of one that suits me perfectly.
Mike's description above certainly whets the appetite and the events always appear fabulous to me from the photos we see here. Just brilliant!
Nothing new, in any of this here though Paul regarding my own personal circumstances and considerations.
Posted by Graham Sinden (Member # 431) on January 05, 2016, 07:44 PM:
Andrew I wouldn't leave it too long to attend film fairs. There is no guarantee these will still be going in say 10 years time. Tadley is already gone together with Derann open days. The midlands film convention is long gone (I think). There are still many other events like Ealing, Blackpool, Farnworth, Group 9.5 etc. but in general they are smaller than they used to be at their height and apart from Ealing this year, many have gone from two a year to only one. There is less dealers around at these events nowadays so DVD sellers are sometimes brought in to fill the hall. However the atmosphere is still there and they are great places to attend and meet like minded collectors and I always come away with a film or two from my want list. I just love film fairs. Cant wait for Ealing.

and you can almost be sure Graham that if we saw the demise of any of them the first to say how sad it is would be the ones that never went. any film event should be treasured.and the people who give us them with their time and effort we should all be truly thankful. for what they provide plays a big part in keeping peoples interest in this film collecting hobby. long may they all continue.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 06, 2016, 03:33 AM:
You never know Graham, you may be able to lose the DVD stalls if the Kodak project takes off in the same manner vinyl now most certainly has.
Who knows where this may lead?
Posted by Lee Mannering (Member # 728) on January 06, 2016, 04:25 AM:
I'll be disposing of a few Derann 8mm Disneys at this ever friendly event. Its a happy gathering this one, nice to be able to have a comfortable sit chatting over film and enjoy that great home baking from the kitchen.
Posted by Andrew Woodcock (Member # 3260) on January 06, 2016, 04:40 AM:
Just needing the two mentioned above now Lee,if you should ever happen to stumble across very near mint versions of either.

ELF projectors were on sale at farnworth from just £35. expect to pay more on ebay
Posted by David Skillern (Member # 607) on February 07, 2016, 08:55 AM:
If that's in full working order Paul - that's amazing - I will be at Ealing this year - do you think there's a chance they'll be that price again?
Posted by Paul Barker (Member # 4318) on February 07, 2016, 09:24 AM:
David. yes fully working. i keep saying on here if you can attend film fairs. go to them. if you are going to ealing a good chance getting one at a better price than online. still think the northern film fairs have the best prices though for both films and equipment. good luck anyway David.
