Need some advice on cleaning film. Will Film-Craft cleaning cloths do as good a job as the film cleaners. Don't know anything on this subject. Also, how often do you clean a film?

Thanks,

Ron Green

Ronald, never heard of your cleaning cloths. I always use a lint free cloth and decent cleaning fluid. My advice is, clean a film only as often as you need to. Properly looked after, films don't really get dirty. A dry cloth will often prove to be all that's necessary, especially so when you've just purchased it. Be careful with colour film. It's possible to spread the dirt down the print using wet methods. I reckon a few others might like to comment, especially those who use this particular make of cleaning cloth.

Yes, dry white cotton hanky gives a clew as to how dirty a film is. Run 10 - 20 feet through it and take a look.

If needed, I use Edwal cleaner. The majority of my films are from the 1960's with some 16mm going back to the 30's.
