Richard - Irrespective of whether you're a long-standing film collector or only thinking about becoming one, this extraordinary, friendly event is an absolute must! And you're a near-neighbour being in the Midlands, because in addition to regulars from every corner of the UK, two collectors from Norway have booked for the dinner this year, as well as Dominique from Belgium. I first came (from South London) in 1984 and I haven't missed one since, as NOT being there would be too painful!

Thanks for all the Saturday dinner bookings from Forum members - it looks like we might have the highest attendance of the post-Derann era! If anyone is still considering coming to the dinner, please advise me of your booking by next Sunday 12 November.

If you're still seeking accommodation in Blackpool, I can recommend the Collingwood Hotel: http://www.collingwoodhotel.co.uk/
Projections Editor Peter Travers brings a Super 8 projector and screen and we have a Sunday night film show there to end the weekend! Accommodation is reasonably-priced and it's about a 7 minute walk from the Hilton.

Looking forward to seeing many people on Friday evening, as well as Saturday. The dinner attendance will smashing the record for the post-Derann era, with 63 now expected! I've just seen the email from Classic Home Cinema with Phil saying he will be bringing items from two collections including Disney features, etc, so that's another indication that this year could be the best for some time, in relation to Super 8 material on offer.

Found that out when we got into Blackpool about 7.15 last night - missed the film show - which i was told was Roger Moore as 007 in A View to a Kill - but it was a long journey from South Wales and my good lady and I were shattered . Looking forward to a relaxing day today in Blackpool - blow the cobwebs away and a picture of me by the statue of my favourite comics - Eric and Ernie in the Winter Gardens - then the convention dinner tonight followed by the Sunday bonanza !!!!

I didn't see any major collection on Super 8mm but Phil Sheard of Classic had some interesting bits and pieces - I bought Texas Chainsaw Massacre from him on 2 x 800ft - but if you looked around and got in there early then there were some good pieces.

Hi Shorty,

It was filmed on the Sunday of the convention - David Guest had some film students to record it. I saw a few people being interviewed and it looked like lots of footage was taken. From what I was told, once this has been edited it will be uploaded to Youtube - so watch this space for details as I'm sure we will all be notified when its up and ready to view.

I'm just back home. It has been a great event this year again. Waiting for better pictures and videos to come, here are mine to give some idea of the good time I believe everyone spent.

 -

Hard to say Nothing happened this week-end at the Blackpool's Hilton [Smile]

 -

This year, I attended the (16 mm) Friday night projection which was over three hours. It started with a mixed reel then there has been the James Bond feature David Skillern mentionned in a precceding message. I took the picture when people were still arriving so it looks half empty but don't worry, there were many people during the three days !

 -

Two projectors : one for the flat reel and the second for the scope film. The gentleman with the white t-shirt, interested by the projectors is from Scotland and came specially for the convention.

 -

A closer look at the material.

 -

The show is finished, time to rewind. Everything went well. I didn't picture the film but other people did. If someone wish to add these photos..

I will add some more pictures tomorrow, but here for anyone interested id a photo of and a link to the Cannon EOS C200 4K resolution cameras used for the movie footage taken.

Saturday night dinner. Since I was one of the few without tie, I tried to remain sit and discreet so I didn't take too many pictures that night.

 -

In addition to the dinner, there is a raffle and a cine quizz (my nightmare). On the table, you can see the prizes of the raffle (I won a super 8 cartoon and...the t-shirt).

 -

David Watson's Fumeo projector ready for the show to come after the dinner.

 -

Everybody was impressed by the quality of the picture provided by this machine.

 -

Keith Wilton (on the right) with one of the Derann employee !

Now for some more pictures of this year.
 -
More dealers, CHC at the back of the hall.

 -

The projector set up for the Sunday shows.

 -

David loading up the 16mm films to move to the auction as Keith Wilton keeps an eye on the stock.

Forum member, Nigel had a lot of super 8 to sell.

 -

Guess who's hidding behind the reels ?

 -

If you answsered Lee (also member of this forum) to the preceeding question, you won.

 -

A super 8 projection was made in the other room. One of the interests of these projections is that you see films you would never have imagined existed on super 8 or you see titles that didn't attract you before.

 -

The 16 mm projection, behind the Elmo from the preeceding picture. The digest "Abbott and Costello was screened. I didn't know it was so nice so I went to the selling room to buy (for 5 pounds) a super 8 copy I saw before [Smile]

Thanks for the photos of me helping Bob sort out the film that came adrift when rewinding onto a warped spool Dominique, I can now prove i was there. [Big Grin]
As the flash on your camera didn't seem to cope well with the large rooms I have taken the liberty of giving a couple a bit of a boost and am re-posting them. I hope you don't mind.

What great pictures of a fabulous event! Nice to see Keith Wilton enjoying himself, and fellow Eumig enthusiast Lee Mannering again, although that's not a Eumig that Lee is holding! [Big Grin]

Who in all these pictures is David Guest?

Paul, David Guest is on the latest picture I posted. He's on the right, holding a film during the auction. I will post another photo of David Guest later in the day when I have access to my computer.

Great Pictures. Thanks.

So what other films were shown apart from what's on the programme. As True Lies was cancelled what was shown in its place.

Well thanks to everyone for posting the great photos. At last we can now all see and appreciate David's wonderful convention. Can't wait for the video.
I want David Watson's Fumeo! How much does it weigh? [Eek!]

Hello Paul glad yourself and others have enjoyed our photos from the Blackpool week-end it would be great to have some of you guys come over for next years bash you would be made most welcome just like our european friends. To answer your question, my Fumeo 9145 weighs including the removable arms almost 43 kgs that's about 100 british pounds, the power unit is seperate and weighs close to 9kgs.
The projector has its own metal stand for it and the power unit but I don't often use it for public shows as it does not fold up and is not very tall. The Reel arms Will hold 6000ft of acetate film and more with polyester film. It's a two track machine and you can select either the main track or the balance track or the two combined through the integral 45amp mono amplifier, though I tend to use it with a SRS sound processor for suedo stereo through a 100w stereo amplifier. the lamp is a 500w Xenon arc xbo lamp mounted horizontally in a pure nickel reflector. The projector is based on Fumeo's 35mm portable model and the super 8 version was available from Fumeo to order only
the last price was more than twenty years ago around £6000

Hi David,

It was good to meet you at the dinner and have a chat - it is good to finally put faces to the names of some of the people on the forum - hope to see you next year.

Hi David (Skillern), it was good to meet you at Blackpool also and I am glad you enjoyed the dinner and convention, I see you have already booked for next year proof, to others what a good week-end it is and once someone has experienced it they always what to come again

I imagine True Lies was cancelled as the lab sound problems are not yet fixed, nothing was shown in its place just the 'scope trailer the promo for The Passage and start of a Bond movie that were the other part of the programme.

Another memorable weekend and great to see numbers rising. I was told there will be a larger contingent from Norway next year and others have said that 2018 will be the year they finally attend, so resisting the appeal of this event seems increasingly difficult. We even now see the famous illuminations turned back on during the Friday and Saturday evenings, which is a bonus for those us who year after year saw the illuminations still in position, but always switched off!

It's always a pleasure to see fellow forum members, and thanks for the feedback concerning the dinner, which seemed to go down exceptionally well. If anyone who missed it would, just for fun, like to have a go at the quiz (15 questions), let me know and I'll post it in another thread.

Amazing to see that David (Skillern) has already booked for 2018, which must be a record! Are the Hilton already accepting bookings at the special Film Fair rate?

Hello David,

Nice to see you briefly in Blackpool - what a brilliant day, you deserve a medal for all your organisation!

I’m still looking for ‘It’s a Wonderful World’ with Ted Heath’s band from 50’s - I know you’ve bought some new collections recently and just wondered if it happened to be in any of those by any chance?

Thanks again for organising such a fantastic event - I’m sorry I could only be there for a couple of hours due to work. I was very touched by the two minutes silence you did too - I didn’t know the people but you’re a gentleman for doing something like that.

Cheers David

All the best

Andy

I think it will be released (for £££'s not free though) in time for the 'one-day-if-you-believe-it' release of these films David never comments on:

re filming at blackpool this was done by a bunch of 10 students and they all did their own filming and its all got to be edited which all takes time in doing so .there will be a sample on you tube and pictures as well but it down to the people who filmed it for me to do it .I asked loads of forum members to do it for me but no one would .so just all be patient and it will be on soon I will put it on this forum with a link to it when its ready
re super 8 films which kevin keeps having a dig at I still have them all but just not got the time to sort them out yet if you want them all kevin come with 10 grand and you can have all the lot and buy them like I bought them without viewing any all top titles .I am a bit disappointed with you kevin that you keep having a go at me after all the top cartoons and fetures I have sold you at bargain prices might be best to by of paul foster

there are always lots of films to be had on all gauges in fact you would find it very hard to find somewere where there would be that many films on offer in one place

Lovely reply David, indeed I am surprised at you in this instance too - my reason for asking for a simple reply to where the '500 super 8 films etc' went to is, if you read your original post, you implied they would be there for Super 8 collectors who went to the recent Blackpool event, not the next one. All you had to do was add a message earlier to say they would not be available this time but of course this would not have had the desired effect to get more Super 8 collectors to attend.

I'm not buying many films anymore David, I have all I want and more than I know what to do with - in fact over the coming months / years you will see me listing about 50% of my collection on here and Ebay as I don't want to have to move them when, as planned, my wife and I move to a smaller house or bungalow as we get older.

Re: the cartoons and films I have purchased from you in the past - thousands of pounds in custom from me over the years -
thank you sincerely I have enjoyed all of them but not so sure about the bargain prices - hope you enjoyed the nice profit you made on the top notch projectors you had from me by the way.

Final note - I will buy films from those who treat me with equal respect so yes Ian at Perry's and Paul Foster will be in there if I ever buy more films, no Classic due to their poor customer service and hopeless communications, and I guess, not from you now as you have shown your true colours in your reply here.

if I would have the time to screen any before blackpool then I would have took some but they all needed to be checked like all the films I sell .re super 8 films classic home cinema had more than enough films for sale to please any super 8 collecter and top titles to .merry Christmas and all the best in the new year kevin and good luck luck with you move

Posted by Kevin Clark (Member # 211) on December 14, 2017, 07:34 AM:

Merry Christmas to you and your family too David, no move planned for us just yet but most likely we will in time buy a plot and build our own house (bungalow ideally) which can be more cost effective in this area with the bonkers UK house price situation. Just need to sell a few shed loads of films first.....

I will sell you my place sits in 3 acres with loads of outbuildings and planning for 2 bungalows and will leave you one building set up with films and a projector thrown in 1.3 million

Posted by Kevin Clark (Member # 211) on December 14, 2017, 10:05 AM:

Sounds like a bargain David just unfortunate you are 300 miles farther North than we would want to move. Mrs Clark would like something smaller really so a maximum of 2 acres would be fine.

Kevin
