I was working with a 16mm 1940’s film that was a hurricane survivor. I normally use Edwal Anti Stat Film Cleaner to clean the films, but this film was particularly messed up. While the Edwal cleaned some of the dirt off, it left a lot to be desired in the cleaning dept. So, I decided to give Urbanski’s Filmrenew a try. I was amazed with what the Filmrenew cleaned off the film.

I've had the same experience with Filmguard as well. Some films are very dirty....I wonder how folks who don't clean their films actually run films this bad through their projectors.

I use the Kelmar film cleaner for my super eight just before it enters the projector later I look at the amount of dirt on those rolls and I ask myself where do I want that dirt to be on the cleaning rolls or in the gate and clogging the sound head the answer is obvious!

oddly enough, ( ) in all of my years collecting films, 39 in all, the only "dirty films" i have ever seen is one i put through a year or so ago just for the novelty, (yes it was),
i think i must be getting older coz afterwards, (200ft colour silent, you know the ones ), i thought to myself,
"i think i'd rather have had a roast beef dinner to watching it". Wont be running it or any others through my pride and joy.

Tom I have never run any of those dirty movies you are on about there. I do have some of those adult sex cartoons by Bob Godfrey and a couple of others.
So that's about as dirty as it gets for me. Except for the all the crap and filth I find on used film prints.

Well, a lot of the dirt is hidden...so out of sight, out of mind.
Or you can use a cleaner that does not do much and think you cleaned it and it still has lots of dirt as I found out when I switched cleaners.
But really, the average person does not know to clean films. I didn't know until a few months after I started to collect films and learned on the forums.
