I have used General Yak as there is no place for 35mm.

I have for sale approximately 250ft of new 35mm leader. It appears to be unprocessed Kodak Plus X stock, it is opaque with either side in different tones of grey. It's 5.5" in diameter and mounted on a 2" core. The Kodak tin is 7.5" in diameter.

I should point out that there are, of course, no frame lines for threading in rack, although it could be attached to a standard SMPTE count-down leader. (See below for a racking suggestion.)

NOTES FROM THE REWIND ROOM.
Racking with an unmarked film can be achieved by acquiring a sprocket from a 35mm projector. The best for the job is the intermittent sprocket situated below the picture gate, but any sprocket having teeth in multiples of four could be used.

Using a knife blade file make two slight notches adjacent to a pair of sprocket teeth, just enough to be visible, not too much to cause damage. Continue such notches every four teeth until you come to the original notch.

FOR USE. Use both hands (thumb and fore-finger), one hand to keep the film attached to the sprocket and the other hand to rotate the film. Line up the end/beginning of the leader adjacent to a notch, rotate gently until the length of film you want has been reached and then make a suitable mark with a fibre pen adjacent to a notch. Do not attempt to do all this too quickly.

Such primitive devices were a common sight when cinemas still used good old film!

Hi Maurice

We just used an old sprocket for all our film work, plenty of those around. With a saw cut every four for a frame line....here is an old photo I took at my time at the cinema.. [Smile]

With a leader with no frame lines, I would start on a frame line on "the sprocket" then simply run it through your fingers until you have the length you want, find the "sprocket frame line" mark the edge of the film with say a red marker with that sprocket frame line and cut...done.

Maurice and Graham we used to draw the frame / racking lines onto the film with something such as white chinagraph pencil or even a thin coating of white marker pen such as Pentel.

We also did what you have done here with the sprocket wheel cut out notches. We were forunate to have two manual frame counters which did the same job as a frame line guide for us.

Another trick was to on the film rewind bench lay a piece of framed academy leader on top of the blank film and very carefully slide it to one side and mark frame lines from there.
