Hi All,

As my Wife and I are staying at The Imperial - it would be good to know details about the Friday Night Film Show and if anything is happening on Saturday afternoon before the Convention on Sunday.

Can we get together for a group photo on Sunday?

Posted by David Skillern (Member # 607) on November 09, 2018, 10:39 AM:

Stuart,

I mentioned this earlier - I hope we can all arrange a time for this to happen and all meet up. Meeting everyone would be great.

I will be there Saturday night and Sunday.

I think this year of all years, particularly as we have colleagues from across the pond coming over for the event, we should make a concerted effort to take some "forum group" photographs. I have met so very few people from this forum but they have been a wonderful source of help and information that it would be great to say "Hi" in person.

Posted by Brian Fretwell (Member # 4302) on November 09, 2018, 02:08 PM:

I'll be there Friday night, Saturday for the meal and Sunday. See you all there.

Posted by David Skillern (Member # 607) on November 09, 2018, 02:09 PM:

Then lets arrange a time and place - say outside the convention room or the foyer of the grand - or outside on the front !

Hi all, although being a member since 2003, I haven't posted for quite a while now but will be in Blackpool Friday to Monday. I would like to meet up with you all.

Wow, how great to hear from old friend Mal again - and he is going to Blackpool! Just wish I could be there to meet him again. His posting has truly made my day!

yes that's a nice gesture I hope I am in the picture the dvds will be a ready for blackpool but these are sold on a first come basis unless pre ordered I also will be projecting the dvd at blackpool all day long on a big screen so you can see yourself on it re auction over 350 films on super to be auctioned plus 9.5 and 35mm and I am bringing 3 transit vans full of 16mm films at prices where you will never buy anywere at that price has I need to get rid of a few to make way for another collection I get after blackpool

Posted by David Skillern (Member # 607) on November 10, 2018, 02:57 AM:

All we have to do is arrange a time - Say midday in the foyer ?

Posted by Brian Fretwell (Member # 4302) on November 10, 2018, 03:06 AM:

Sounds like a good place as it will between the main hall and the cinema.

Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on November 10, 2018, 06:17 AM:

Gentlemen, steer me in the right direction,as I'll be getting adjusted to new surroundings - Cheers, Shorty - First, I must get to the train station after landing to buy ticket to Blackpool. Once there, I should be well-acclimated -

Shorty,

although i'm not staying at the Grand, my hotel is just 2 minutes walk from the Grand - so if you're at a loose end Saturday afternoon - ill meet you in the bar !!

Hi Joe, (shorty)
When you get to Blackpool train Station ask a station staff member or
perhaps a police man etc for directions to the beach front,it's not far.
when you are at the beach front look out to sea, then turn to your right
you are now facing North, walk along the beach front after about half a mile you will see the Grand Hotel (formerly the Hilton) it's a tall modern looking building set in it's own area.
If this is too far grab a cab he'll take you straight there.
Hope this be of some use to you see next week-end.

Regards

Dave Watson
don't forget you are booked in for the Convention dinner on Saturday Night. Starts about 7.30 pm

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on November 10, 2018, 01:44 PM:

Shorty, I have never taken the train from the airport to the city since I travel by coach but I believe tickets are cheaper when booked in advance. If you have not bought your ticket, yet, it may Worth have a look on the Net. Not easy, though since planes may have delays. Maybe British members, more used with this system could advise.

Posted by Pete Middleton (Member # 6655) on November 10, 2018, 04:37 PM:

I'm a little concerned about reading an earlier post that The Grand is formerly The Hilton.
We've booked tickets at The Hilton over the convention weekend... I'm hoping these tickets will be valid!

Pete

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on November 10, 2018, 08:19 PM:

I'll also be there from Friday evening, so can join everyone for the photo and a chat.

Shorty - another option, as well as walking or a cab, would be to head to the seafront, perhaps to the nearby North Pier, and then get one of Blackpool's famous trams to the Grand. I think there's a stop just north of the North Pier and they all go along the front, so if you get one heading north, you can't go wrong. You pay a conductor on the tram, who could tell you the stop to get off at.

Pete - the whole event was organised while the hotel was still the Hilton, so there's no way that they would not honour any bookings made before the change of owner. However, you're not on my list with regard to having places at the Saturday dinner, so if you're hoping to attend this, please let me know asap!

Posted by Brian Fretwell (Member # 4302) on November 11, 2018, 11:32 AM:

If you do take the tram, the nearest stop is called Wilton Parade (I kid you not, Keith Wilton gets jokes made about that).

Posted by Joe Caruso (Member # 11) on November 11, 2018, 02:24 PM:

I should get off at Wilton Parade?

Posted by Terry Sills (Member # 3309) on November 11, 2018, 04:53 PM:

A member of this forum has been informed by David that he is currently suffering bad health and is in hospital. The recent posts do not hint at any such affliction. Although we all trust that this is not the case, perhaps David can illuminate, as to why he made this claim. The Blackpool event is essentially his production and if true perhaps members should be aware.

Posted by Brian Fretwell (Member # 4302) on November 11, 2018, 05:15 PM:

Joe, yes get off at Wilton Parade, you can easily see the hotel from there about 50- 100 yrs away.

I haven't heard anything about David being ill, but do know that Phil from CHC has been in hospital but is out and OK now.

Posted by Adrian Winchester (Member # 248) on November 11, 2018, 06:53 PM:

The North Pier to Wilton Parade would be a fairly short journey that's more than one stop, so it would be considered a "medium" tram journey, with a fare of £2.30 that you pay to someone who walks around the tram to collect it.

Perhaps there has been a misunderstanding regarding David. I'm aware that he needed to spend some time in hospital fairly recently, but I thought he was much better now.

My son and I are still hoping to be there Sunday if he`s not called in.

Love to meet some people but I can`t do hand shakes sadly.

Just hoping the weather holds and about 3 + hours if a decent run from here.

Just amazed the lengths some people go to, to be there. That feels like a long job for us in small England.

Best Mark.

Hello David
So glad that you are on the up after your troubles, but don't overdo things at the convention and undo all the good work. Get your sons to do all the heavy work
[Cool]
No unfortunately I won't be attending. I live just about as far away as possible in this country and on top of that I have recently moved house, so too much on my plate at the moment, but good luck and I'm certain that you will have a 'full house'.
Take care
Terry

From my experience, I can assure you that British hospitality will not disappoint you. For your films, there is usually in the UK, unlike on the continent, a "Bring and buy" table for people who have not enough items to sell to take a table. I don't remember if there is one at Blackpool. I cannot wait to meet you 😀

Posted by David Guest (Member # 2791) on November 13, 2018, 04:34 PM:

hi shorty I run and bring and buy or you can put films in the auction

Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on November 13, 2018, 04:44 PM:

Ah yes, David, I remember now that the Bring and buy corner was beside your tables full of films and material. A few days to wait before the good time starts 😎

David (Skilern), I see in Adrian's programme that there will be projections at that time, maybe you're not aware of them. I quote Adrian : "New for 2018 are informal Saturday presentations by collectors, organised by James Cecil. These will occupy half hour slots from around 10.00am to 4.00pm, so drop in whenever convenient for you. I believe these shows will also take place in a room within the Trafalgar Suite". Hope to meet you anyway [Smile]

Hi Dominique,

I had an idea that films were going to be shown on Saturday afternoon - but nobody told me about times and where this was taking place - as I'm not going to the convention dinner this year - I hope I will get to meet everyone at the screening on Saturday and also in the convention.

Hi Simon, it would of been nice to meet you, and others, but I don`t think I will be there now.

My sons other half booked a family day thing on a group on for Sunday they have to use that day, thinking we were going next week ( !!! ??? ).Well ahem etc.

I`ve not been too well so thought shall I try on my own, but today a screeching noise is coming from the passenger side front wheel.

Its maybe in cahoots with the non cine ladies at this end !!!

We will try to go to Farnsworth though, so maybe a few of us will meet up there.

I can`t use public transport so looks like it will need to be February after all. But thats a very nice event that needs the support too.

But really looking forward to hearing what people do and get at Blackpool etc.

Best Mark.

Phil from Classic Home Cinema has confirmed he will come : "We shall be there with a first class selection of films and equipment,, most is not listed on our website. We will also have film cleaner , splicing tapes, lamps etc to stock up on. We have unusual items like CIR splicers in s8 16, 9.5 and 35mm.
We also have speakers by Craven and Elmo pairs. We have a super curtain motor as well as lenses, parts, and bits & bobs
We look forward to seeing you there. Our website is up to date, and we hope to upgrade the list with all the new stuff that's not sold shortly after Blackpool.
We don't plan to take much 16mm, so it you want any tell us now.(Dave Guest has a vast 16mm library to liquidate)
In the meantime we are busy packing and will load up on Friday."

Hi Simon please thank your uncle Geoff for me, that would of been so good of him, though we are a bit out of the way here.

But I still can`t come without my ( nutty ) van and my sons support really.

I don`t want to get too into my problems, but I feel I should explain to a degree, I can`t even go in my sons car for various reasons.

I have two plastic garden chairs in my home I sit on I wash regularly, that I have very large towels on I wash each day.

In my van its driver seat and one in the back I can sit on, that have various covers on, then cotton ones over those I can wash each day. Some days I can get 2 days out of them, but still need to shower and change as soon as back in the house anyway.

Those 2 house and 2 van seats are the only places I can sit down. But I can`t really say relax on.

Also I can only use my toilet, or the small one in the van for anything, that I have sole dominion over if you will.

I go through 10,000 to 20,000 disposeable gloves a month. And to be honest it was going to be embarressing if I needed to touch anything with them, at Blackpool etc.

Also I couldn`t shake hands or sit down etc. I also needed my sink in the van there too.

Thats just the tip of my iceberg, it can be very wearing.

But thats enough about me.

Its going to be a great event.

Thank youy again Simon, that was so very kind and thoughtful of you and your Uncle.

Best Mark.

It was a real treat to see so many forum people in the flesh, what a smashing bunch of people! I only made it on the Sunday for the dealer's room, there was an astonishing amount of 16mm available with prices from just £25, - I saw armfuls of prints being eagerly snatched up but I thought the 8mm gauge was lacking with CHC being the only ones with anything to sell. The Bring and Buy was stocked up well, I made a couple of exciting purchases and sold a ton of stuff too. I didn't make the auction as I had to go take the kids to the funfair, but I did make the group photo, hopefully it'll be posted on here soon, if it's possible to squeeze so many collectors into 500 pixels.

The only downside on the weekend was David's very sad announcement at the end of Sunday. I am not sure it's my place to elucidate further but needless to say there were a few tears, and next year's event will be a very different beast.

I was just told about the announcement Stuart, but I was hoping to goodness it was wrong.

Sadly it might not be, but I won`t say more either.

I have sent David a message - But as a member of the film community on the forum - it was a great event, very well organised and so great to meet new friends and to watch some great film shows - long may this event continue.

Thank you David Guest a True Showman

now that David has made his anouncement i would just like to add the following. i have known David for over 25 years in which time we became very good friends. he has done so much for the hobby and has supplied many of you with fine 16mm titles. he took over the Blackpool convention to allow us to enjoy and extend our hobby. as we have always said, those that did not attend really did not realise what they were missing. he made it a fabulous event for us all. i and the regular helpers will be there again next year. i will miss David so so much. but in the meantime i will be with him at his open day in december where once again we can meet up with our collector friends. so thank you MR David Guest.thank you for being a great great friend. Paul Barker.

I honestly feel all over the place and unsettled at this tragic news. I almost don`t know what or how to feel.

David is such a mainstay of the hobby, and part of so many peoples lives, and filmie connections etc.

Thats a gap I just can`t see anyone else filling like that.

I am so very sorry David, we`ve never met in person, but you`ve been very kind, and a good friend too and our phone chats etc.

Best wishes and my thoughts, to you and all your family. Mark.

How very sad. I have never met David, but as a result of this forum we all know that he is an enormously important figure in the film collecting world. Everyone here, whether they have been to Blackpool or not, or met David or not, owes David a huge thank you for fielding this UK event, with true showmanship flare, every year.
Thank you David and God Bless You.

I have known David properly since about 2000-2001. In those years he has become a friend, someone to laugh with, someone to talk film & projectors with...a decent bloke all-round. Without him, Blackpool would be a thing of the past. His passion, devotion and organisation have kept it all going. I am totally gutted and still unable to think straight. This weekend, we saw the human side of this hobby; people's offers of help, care and genuine love. That's why I'll never forget this edition of the fair.

However, the Open Day is going to be a must for me to attend. David...you are the best.

Just got home about an hour ago and downloaded a few photos. Here's the one I took of the meet up in the foyer of the Grand Hotel. It does look a bit less sharp with only 550 pixels width, there were a lot of us and I'm not in this one though I'm sure there will be more posted as many more taken.

Despite the news he had to give later David was still "selling" the Convention, see the programme fronts we are holding.

Not easy to comment such a tragic new. There is no doubt that David Guest has made wonders. If so many people attend the event he organizes, there must be a reason. I have jumped into the Blackpool film convention three years ago and my only regret is that I didn't go before. Thanks a lot for everything, David, we are all aware that behind the success of your yearly event there is a lot of work and passion.

Here is the picture I took during the "forum meeting" but, please, note that this is ot the official photo (which was taken by a non-member for a member but I don't know who). I'm just posting my "version" to give a general idea of that moment. I suggest that when the official picture will be posted, everyone identify himself. I post some other pictures in another thread.

Very sad news, but how brave to carry on to make sure the event was a success and ensure the enjoyment of others. Also to make that announcement publicly. I doubt there was a dry eye in the house.

David, We've never met but I've followed your posts and the Blackpool fair with great interest. I was very shocked to read your announcement and can only hope that you will be spared any pain associated with your condition. Enjoy each day as it comes knowing you've served many and been a great encouragement to more than one newbie to the hobby. Very best wishes. Dave

I've never had the pleasure of meeting David, though I have bought films from him, and I'd just like to add my voice to the shocked and sad responses here. Awful news.

I am number 4.

Don't you think it is a credit to David Guest that the photo includes people from the UK, Norway, Belgium and USA ?

I'm No.1 in the photo. I'm not aware of 12/15/16/17 being members of this forum, but they were invited to appear due to being four of our five visitors from Norway.

Many thanks to the Forum members who were amongst the 66 who attended the Saturday dinner. I think this was the highest number of the post-Derann era. I must credit Peter Wilson, who compiled the film show, and also won the quiz for the 4th time.

It's difficult to sum up the overall experience, because however enjoyable most of the weekend was, David's announcement after the auction was inevitably a terrible shock. I can't add much to what has already been said, but I salute the extraordinary bravery displayed by David and his family, and their determination to make the event a success, despite dealing with a 'bombshell' that would have overwhelmed many. I expect all the collectors with a great affection for the Blackpool convention will agree that we have every reason to be very grateful to David, for the enormous effort he has put into maintaining and developing the event over the last six years.

What sad, terrible news. Thank you David for all you've done for our hobby. I recall the excitement in 2011 when the announcement was made that the Blackpool convention would continue. Thank you again for keeping it going.

Doug
