Very interesting article about bootleg distribution in the Soviet Union. I had never heard before about 'bone records' which were reused X-ray images cut as vinyl records...

Some things never change!

About 8 years ago I spent two weeks in Novosibirsk: the garden spot of Siberia. The hotel was pretty awful: while I was there they shut down the hot water for maintenance a few days! There was no AC and no screens in the windows either. Being summer is hot there the basic choice was baking to death or being gnawed down to a skeleton by the immense Siberian Mosquitoes!

-ahhhh, but the TV!

Naturally. there wasn't a lot on for an English speaker, but one day I changed the channel, and there were The Simpsons!

Homer and Marge! Bart, Lisa and Maggie! It was a sign of home!

-but it was a Russian dub! Not only was it a Russian dub, it was a BAD Russian dub! Yes, the boys at Moe's were all speaking Russian, but you could hear the original English track just as loud! (It felt like broadcast-bootleg!)

Entertainment choices being what they were, I watched it anyway!
