My wife came home from work early today I asked why?, there has been a shooting and many people are dead. Steven my son had been trying to contact me as he new I usually call into the local mall that is just round from a nearby mosque, that had been one of the two targets this afternoon.

Tragically a high number of people were killed at both mosque my a gunman with a semi automatic weapon. I understand both he and three anothers have been arrested. It appears he had come from Australia and had picked on New Zealand as the place to carry out this attack. The police also have defused a number of car bombs as well and feel there my be others involved nationwide.

I feel for all those that have been killed in this terrible attack.

Shootings like this have become all to common here in the U.S. Sad to see such violence also occuring in other parts of the world. Such a waste if innocent lives.

Just heard that the total is up to 49 dead. My thoughts are with all those killed, injured, their relatives and all in the country.

My 13 year granddaughter told me she spent the afternoon at school in lockdown underneath a desk.

49 were killed with another 48 from young children to adults are being treated for gunshot wounds.

Prime minister Jacinda Arden said the attack appeared to have been well planed in what she described as an act of extreme violence.

New Zealand terror threat level has been lifted to high for the first time in its history in the wake of what is now formally being described as a terrorist attack.

It is terrifying when an act of such wickedness happens so close to those we love. My thoughts are with you and those around you Graham.

Now they are saying one of the gunmen was live-streaming this to Facebook and had announced it to a white supremacist group 15 min before . What can you say about people like this?

Joe,

Yes, this is a film forum, however to me this is the same as talking with your friends, trying to make sense out of something that's incomprehensible. We support each other in many ways here, not only in celluloid matters.

Joe,

No reason to edit! Your post is understandable and valid.

Shocked to hear the news as my daughter and partner live in NZ. Hard to believe that life is so unimportant to some people that they can terminate it on a whim and leave broken hearted families to pick up the pieces. It’s a sad world.

Saddly, it seems that no part of the world is spared from those things.

Pretty soon, we'll be in the state of "A Clockwork Orange"

Just stay out of the line of fire ...

Be safe, my friend, to you and you're better half, of course!

Yesterday when I was in town I went past the mosque just after mid-day to the mall round he corner for a quick cup at muffin break before heading out to the heritage park.

Everyone was just going about there normal business, terrible to think that all that was soon to quickly change.

I understand that the hospital had 12 operating theatres in use last night.

Thanks Janice

Its quite heart braking to read some of the back ground stories now coming out in the press, on some of those killed, and why they came to New Zealand with there families to start a new life in the first place.

It appears also that the gunman was still heavily armed and was on his way to do more when police arrested him. The actions of the police and all the emergency staff at the hospital and else where have done an incredible job.

The world has become a frightening place. It is also a beautiful place if we all work in harmony to keep it so. These terrorist attacks on innocent people are a sickening sign of humanity losing its way. Hatred, bigotry and prejudice hurt everyone. It is the cause of all the troubles in the world past and present. We are not born with these attitudes. They are learned. They are taught. I don't pretend to have any answers but I do question ( as many do) why there is so much hatred in the world.

A single post has been deleted from this thread. I realize it is very difficult, however please avoid political discussions.

why there is so much hatred in the world
Hatred is everywhere, have been and will be in this world.

I have only two sons, they will start a quarrel for a simple thing and will trigger hatred eventually.

It is the surrounding that can make them peace again (meaning us) and to comfort them after the quarrel.

New Zealand has always been my favorite travel destination and, for me at least, a "Garden of Eden" in terms of beautiful scenery, flora and fauna, friendly people, and peace. My heart is breaking for all affected by this horrible tragedy.

So sorry to read of this tragedy in Graham's home town. Who would have thought this could happen in NZ, possibly the most civilized and peaceful nation on earth. I know what the people in Christchurch are going through because we had 50 people massacred at the Pulse night club shooting here in Orlando a couple of years ago. The community will somehow rally together and get through this horrific event, but it will never be forgotten.
I could say a lot more but I know Doug, being the ever vigilant moderator of this forum, will not permit it.

Been awhile, Graham, so just now seeing this discussion. So sorry that sick and evil people do these things, and did this in your lovely city. Thought of you when I first heard the news. I can wish for the healing of your community, but honestly, in some respects it will never be the same again. So sorry.
