The wood structure from the 13 th century is lost forever and firemen are not sure they will be able to stop the fire.

Latest new is that the structure in stones seems to be saved. Fire is still on but is lower than before.

The good news today is that the Cathedral is saved and able to be rebuilt, all be it the 13th century wood structure is lost forever.
It was just 30 minutes away from being totally lost to the fire.
Most importantly, no one lost there lives so Notre Dam will be rebuilt and will take five years.

On a lighter note,i guess Quasimodo will be staying at Esmeralda's until its rebuilt [Wink]

Hello Tom,

Firemen were great as it was difficult to clear fire fast and in a same time to save the fragile arch structure......
The big organ is not too much damaged and will be completely dissassembled to be fully refurbished. Some stain pipes are just some hundred years old. the Cock emblem which was installed at the top of Violet-Le duc roof-arrow has been recovered.
From our side, some people are saying N-D will be rebuilt within 5 years : This is a joke.... 101 years were necessary to achieve N-D.

"Compagnons du devoir", masters in traditionnal carpentry and traditionnal stone art-work agrees for something like 15 or 20 years working time are necessary.

Anyway, "compagnons du devoir" are alone to know how to rebuilt in respect for tradition, I am afraid there are not enough qualified hand workers.
An other problem is to find suitable oak trees : 800 years ago, oak used were already 300 or 400 years old.....
1000 years ago all oaks available around Paris area were used.
All the roof was estimated for 1200 Ton of oak. To be add , 250 Ton of lead was used to seal the roof.

Those firemen were quite amazing. Just looking at the size of that fire, its unbelievable that they were able to get it under control.And the news reports satating that another half an hour would have meant that the cathedral would have been lost. Even that huge glass window looks like it can be saved.

Yes unfortunately catchey populist soundbites won`t get it fixed.

I remember looking around Notre Dame in 1990, amazing and wonderful doesn`t get there.

But 5 Years !!! surely impossible.

Also there can surely be no way on eath yet they know how the remaining stone load bearing is strength wise etc etc.

But as you say phil, the wood and the workers, masons, craftsmen etc etc to do it properly of its time.

I`d gues anywhere up to and over 20 years at least.

They will need to train a lot of people up even at basic levels.

Remember the huge fire at York minster 1984? It's all fixable but unfortunately the historic losses can never be replaced.

I agree that the loss of the historic fabric is tragic, but just think of all the opportunities now for people to repair and rebuild - craftsmen employed and openings for young people to learn traditional skills.

On the "plus side" (if there IS a plus), at least the renovations had not been finished and then it caught fire, that would make it even more hard to take.

Gallows humor Tom? one thing mankind is getting pretty good at,rebuilding our tourist attractions!Some years ago an earthquake shook Christchurch's cathedral apart. It is finally on the way to repair and meantime local citizens are using a transitional cardboard structure-made in Japan.

No problem with Tom's Humour from my side.....

However, investigations are not closed and nobody understand how a fire can accelerate so fast even if initiated from an electrical arc.

At this time fire origin stays a fully entire enigma.
