I have this magazine from the 1930's that details how to build your own 9.5 projector out of wood

Dino,
Will you be uploading it to the Film-Tech Manuals section?

Either that, or making a scan available vie Email?

Excellent!

If you found a couple of tin cans and some string you could make it a sound projector!

I once had a book from the 1930s like this that is a bunch of articles for teenage boys on how to build various things. Some of the more interesting items included a propeller driven sled for two, a telephone system, a backyard merry-go-round (for "little sis and brother") and a small sailboat.

Maybe it's just me but the teenage boys I know generally don't seem that resourceful. You'd be lucky if they can change the channel when they lose the remote, never mind building a working submarine in their parent's garage!

I can imagine, that back in the 1930's, owning a 9.5mm projector was a dream of many kids (heck, it was a dream of mine in the 1950's), but the price of a purchased machine was probably equal to about 4 weeks wages back then, so it was totally out of reach for most families. The Practical Mechanics wooden projector was probably a very attractive DIY project at the time.
Look how neat men (and boys) dressed back then, compared with today's sloppy style!

Not only did they wear a tie, Paul, but they had natural blonde hair and didn't go for that artificial "silver" look!

Excellent Dino, But the writing is slightly too small. Could you email me the scans at gsinden (at) mail (dot) com.

That would be much appreciated if you could do that.

Dino,
I guess those are photos from a digital camera rather than scans?
If you are able to do scans (or if you have a friend who can), I would appreciate a copy too...

Incidentally, for the benefit of our world-wide friends, this is from Practical Mechanics, one of a wide range of "Practical ----" magazines published by the great George Newnes in the UK over many, many years. For UK members, who can forget the other iconic name associated with this publisher...F.J.Camm, who edited, amongst others, Practical Wireless and Practical Television. I was a subscriber to the latter until it went out of circulation at the turn of the Century. Heady days!

Dino's scans popped into my Inbox this AM: quite fascinating the ingenuity of people with the limited facilities available then. I try to follow the same philosophy in all my DIY projects; there is little need for total accuracy if everything (within reason) is adjustable. And don't be frightened to use lateral thinking when cannibalizing the most unlikely things to achieve your aim!
So who's the first to build his own 28mm, seeing how expensive they are?

Thanks Dino, it makes for some fascinating reading. I will attempt to make it one of these days.

It is also interesting to note that in the 10 years Ive been attending Group 9.5 events and have their magazine, I have never seen it mentioned anywhere or seen a working model that someone has made.

Many thanks again,

Graham S

Is it possible to get a copy of the scans. This would be a fun project for myself and my son.

Thanks,
