Hi everyone, it's been quite a while since I've shot with 9.5mm. I wanted to get back into it, but don't know where I can purchase fresh 9.5mm film. I've ordered 9.5mm film from a store in the U.K. a while back, but I don't have that store's contact information, nor can I remember its name. I don't have any 9.5mm cassettes, so I was looking for a service that would loan me a cassette along with the film and I would return it along with my film and have it processed there. That was how I used to get my film, that is.
I tried googling and looking on here for sources. Wolf accepts orders, but only if you have an empty cartridge to load the film in. Is there anyone else that you would recommend?
It doesn't really matter if I end up shooting with B&W film or color, this stuff is hard to find as it is, so I'm not going to be picky.
Thanks very much!

Robert
The UK dealer may have been Roy Salmons of Photoworld in Llandudno who used to supply 9.5mm in P and H chargers, and also on 50ft spools. Grahame Newnham's Pathefilm web-site still mentions him.
Grahame has empty H chargers for sale, but no longer supplies 9.5mm film reloads.

Hi Maurice,
Thanks very much for replying. Roy Salmons--that name does sound very familiar to me. Would you happen to know if he still supplies 9.5mm film?
Would you happen to have his email address? I came across his phone number when I googled him, but being that I don't have an international phone card, I thought it would be easier to send him an email rather than calling him.
Thank you very much.

Due to ill heath Roy Salmons has given up dealing in cine. The business is now run by his wife and is called Photoworld Model Railways.

At the moment there appears to be no source for unexposed 9.5mm film stock.

Hi Maurice,
Thank you very much for the info. I'll have to keep a look out for the next time there's fresh film available.

Hello Robert, As a "dyed in the wool" nine fiver, I sadly can only confirm that there is no 9.5mm camera stock any more. If you browse the 9.5 forum pages you will see that there may be some B&W available some time in the future from cut and re perforated 35mm film. Also Ferrania are planning to to make Ferraniacolour again but whether this will be 9.5mm is unclear. We had film from Fuji up to about 3 years ago but that has all gone now. No one appears to be making 9.5mm camera film any more unfortunately. Ken Finch.

The Spanish 9.5 club has recently tested a black and white stock with success. The 35 mm stock is being reperfored to 9.5 and film will be available but this will take time as it is not done as a commmercial activity but as a way to preserve the gauge until colour filmstock is available again (from Ferrania or Kodak, it the American company will offer its announced Ektachrome for the end of this year). I've received not later than this morning an e-mail from the Spanish ninefiver who sent me a 30 mt black and white spool a few weeks ago (due to the lost of my mum in December I haven't put this film in my camera, yet) saying that a Spanish lab had been contacted and is willing to process these films (tests will be done during the following weeks) as Color City in France doesn't want (for a reason I don't know) to handle black and white films and the Dutch lab that can process it is limited by its material to lenghts below 15 mt/50ft. I understand the Spanishs want filmstock and process available before their next annual 9.5 festival that will be held in April (in Calella).

That is great news. Dominique, how can I follow the progress of this so I may order some film when it is available?
My condolences on the loss of your mother.

Thank you, Robert. I'm still not completely realizing...The Spanish ninefiver I am in contact with is Mister Ramon Gasso. I guess there is no problem to give his e-mail via PM to those who would be interested but I cannot post it directly on the forum without his permission. I would advise to wait until the filmstock is currently available before contacting him (by the way, I don't know if this gentleman speaks English, I communicate in French with him and, of course, he speaks Spanish). The lab that has been contacted to process the films is based in Malaga (Spain) and has a website but 9.5 processing is not yet mentionned http://www.super8-spain-lab.com/ and http://retrolab.eu/Revelado_super8_servicios.html (in Spanish). I'm willing to keep on supporting the hobby but should I temporarily disappear in case I would have a bigger shock in the future regarding my mum's lost, the French Cine Club de France will be happy to give more information when things will be ready. Hopefully, I will be able to do that myself in this space.

Hi Dominique,
This all sounds very encouraging and great to hear. I'd would be great to shoot some footage with 9.5mm again, it really is a great format.
I will be sure to check on the forum regularly for any updates on when any fresh film is available. Thank you again for bringing me up to speed.

Monsieur Colland, the former manager of Color City, now retired but still helping his daughter who run now the company, is making efforts to get colour stock as soon as possible. First, I got the reason why Color City refused to handle black and white stock : it is now illegal in France (for environmental reasons) to process black and white films (this is only in France, other European countries still have the right to do that). Second new : Kodak sent a letter to Color City to say that their coming back Ektachrome will not be available in 35 mm unperfored stock. Monsieur Colland will however contact the American company again as it would be surprising that super 8 stock would be manufactured directly and not from a larger size. Ferrania has, announced that it would be possible for them to provide 35 mm unperfored film but the question is : when ? They seem to be close to bring something back to the market but cannot give any date. So 9,5 colour stock could be available soon or it could take more months before Something is announced. Black and white seem to be an temporarily good option for several filmakers so there should be new films shoot this year as soon as the Spanish ninefivers can provide filmstock to the rest of the world.

Hi Dominique,
Thanks very much for the update. I had no idea that kodak was bringing back ektachrome. This is wonderful news!!! Hopefully someone will be able to provide the 35mm unperforated film that is needed.
I'd be perfectly happy shooting with black and white film. Any film is better than none. Would you happen to know around when the Spanish ninefivers will have black and white 9.5mm available?
Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on January 30, 2017, 04:34 PM:
Robert, Kodak announced the come back of Ektachrome for the end of this year (http://www.kodak.com/us/en/corp/press_center/kodak_brings_back_a_classic_with_ektachrome_film/default.htm). I will of course report here any good new about 9.5 filmstock (black and white or colour).

Hello Robert, I am one who likes to shot in 9,5mm with fresh film. Until a few months ago we have film by Color City, which cuts the film in all formats for various cameras (30mt, 15mt and 8,20mt). Now the situation has been very well described by friend Dominique.

Ferrania moving very slowly and no one knowing yet anything about the quality and the price of their future cine filmstock, attemps are still made to find filmstock from other sources for the period before ferrania can provide us something. One manufacturer (I will not name here) has 35 mm unperfored colour stock but at a price that doesn't allow to make 9.5 stock at an affordable price for an amateur use. So, this source is discarded at the moment (I know that contacts are still made to discuss the price, so it is not completely "lost"). Another possible source is going to be explored but the supplier (that I will not name, neither) is not in Europe and it will take some time to have a confirmation that film will be available. A third possibility is also to be checked (but it seems to be more a rumour that a serious possibility). So to summarize, Ferrania eagerly awaited and meanwhile other possibilities are looked for but so far nothing has turned out to be right to provide colour film. The only possibility to shoot in 9.5 at the moment is to use stock bought while it was still available (it seems that French ninefivers made more stock than abroad), to shoot in black and white or to shoot with reperfored film from 16 mm stock. Keep your fingers crossed.

thanks for the update, Dominique. I suppose we will have to wait and see what Ferrania will come up with.
I'm very glad that black and white film is available. Who can I contact to obtain a roll of black and white film?
Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on April 12, 2017, 05:08 PM:
Robert, the Spanish ninefivers are manufacturing a small quantity of black and white film (as they do on a "handicraft" way) and said they would be able to provide some oustide Spain in April. As there will be the Calella (in Spain) 9.5 festival next week, more details should be available regarding the availability. The Spanish ninefivers could buy a limited quantity of 35 mm unperfored stock but now it has to be reperfored (in Germany) and a (Spanish) lab was contacted for the process (this lab was interested and made tests but I don't know if they are already able to process or not). All this and the limited camera spools available make things going slow and on a small scale. I should be able to provide more informations (good or bad) within the two weeks about the black and white stock.

I asked Ferrania : "When will the movie stock (16/8 and 35 unperfored) be available ?" Here is their answer : "Cine stocks will be available when we have the appropriate capacity to produce them, the finances to do so and enough bandwidth for our 7-person factory team to be able to test them thoroughly. In other words, all in good time (except unperfed 35, which we will probably not produce except by special order - and special order films are FAR in the future)." :-(

Dominique,
Thank you for the update. This doesn't sound like great news, but at least we know the reality of the situation.
I'm really hoping the Spanish Ninefivers will be willing to sell some of their black and white film stock to people abroad. It would be great to finally start shooting again. I know you mentioned you will hear from them soon. Please keep us posted.
Thank you again for keeping us up to speed.

Here are the latest news about the black and white stock. A film test has been showed in Calella and the results are good. It is fresh, newly manufactured 100 asa film. The contrast is good and it is a real black and white film, not sepia. Mr Otte from Germany reperfored it and his work is perfect. He got film to reperfor when he was in Calella, so when he will have reperfored the 35 mm unperford stock to 9.5, it will be available for everyone. Mr Otte has first to cut the 300 mt reel in smaller lengts (120 mt seem to be the best for him), then the 35 mm has to be cut in three strips of 9.5 film (with a little lost of course) and only then he can perfor. All this has to be done in the dark so that work will take time. The 9.5 film will be sent to Spain to be put on 30 mt spools but there is no doubt that if anyone wishes smaller (or larger lenghts) that can be discussed with the Spanish club (the owner of the stock). It should also be possible to pay the Spanish club and have the stock sent immediately to you if you don't need it on a spool (or if you can send an empty spool to Mr Otte). All this is new so discussion is the word of the day. The process of the film shown in Calella was made by an amateur. It was good but not perfect (following festivals followers standards, the main problem was that on small sections of the film there was some visible residue of one of the chemical used). So a lab (in Spain) was contacted and agreed to process 9.5 (they already process super 8 and 16 with professionnal results) but need time to adapt their machine to be able to handle 9.5. To avoid any dispappointments, the Spanish club, in his official communication says that everything should be ready by the end of the year but unofficially things could go quicker and I understand that one or two months may not an impossible time to have something on the market. Once black and white film is available for everyone, I will of course announce it here. I had also confirmation that a solution for colour stock is still looked for (but by the French club in this case) ; a feedback is still waited
Mr Otte, the German hero who reperfors 35 mm film to 9.5
Mr Gassó, the Spanish ninefiver who is making possible the return of black and white 9.5 filmstock.
Sorry for the poor quality of these two pictures ; they were taken with my mobile phone as I had a (now solved) problem with my camera.

Great steps forward, Dom!
I know Mr. Otte for cut of Avichrome, he is a serious and competent person.
Hurrą for the Spain!
It's a long time that they not shot to in 9.5mm b w, we hope to do it very soon!

Colour filmstock seems not to be to seen in the following weeks or even months on 9.5. The abroad possibility has turned to be not possible and Ferrania has answered to my questions that they would probably not manufacture 35 mm unperfored film and if they do it that would be far from now so it is obvious that any quick solution will not come from them. Except if a remaining (in good condition) stock surfaces from somewhere, the only possibility to shoot on colour stock would be to reperfor 16 mm film or to find an agreement with the company able to provide what we need but at too higher price. Solutions are still looked for but black and white seem to be the 9.5 salvation for the moment. There will be a 9.5 festival in June so Mr Otte will probably tell us how many (or do you say much ?) lenght of black and white film he has already reperfored. A French member created a home processing box to second the availability of the film. I shall put pictures soon.

Hi Dominique,
I hope you are doing well! I was wondering if you could provide us with any updates on the availability of black and white 9.5mm film? It's been a while since I've checked in with you and just wanted to see if any rolls are available for sale.
Thank you!

Thank you very much, Dominique! I'm looking forward to hearing back from you!
Posted by Dominique De Bast (Member # 3798) on November 21, 2017, 09:24 PM:
Hello Robert. Nothing new regarding the availability of black and white filmstock has been reported to the French club so I guess that the preceeding informations are still valid : we have to wait the 2018 batch from the manufacturer as there was no longer unperfored film available when the Spanish club asked for it. I know that due to the limitation of the quantity available, there has been a restriction on the number of lenght that anybody could buy to try to satisfay the largest number of people possible. I have no idea if a small quantity of film is still remaining. Only Mister Grasso from Spain can answer as the film belongs to the Spanish club. Color City in France is still looking for colour filmstock but it is hard at the moment to find out from Kodak and Ferrania what is rumour and what is fact.
