I have noticed that the speed control rheostat puts out quite a bit of heat; when I pulled it out and checked it it was ceramic housed so not to worried, but am wondering what your thoughts are on this guys.

I've never had an issue with the rheostat on the K109 nor on any of my 16mm Keystones that basically are the same design. I don't recall it ever getting excessively hot either...but it is very close to the lamp which might contribute to the warming. As you discovered the rheostat is ceramic and well protected. Rheostats can get hot...perhaps check the voltage going to the switch.
