I've bought a number of used plastic 16mm spools in the larger sizes in recent years. Most are OK but maybe a third are warped leading to uneven take-up. Is there any simple cure? Are new spools still available? Thanks.

I usually stuff towels inside the reel and leave it a few days in a warm room. Seems to work.

I loathe reel screech with a passion.😠

Thanks for all your replies. I'll give the suggestions a try. I don't want to open the flanges too wide. I much prefer plastic spools to handle but I suspect the old heavy steel spools are less prone to warp and can be bent back if necessary.

Metal spools are relatively easy to bend into their original position, but go carefully with the Cyldon aluminium spools as they tend to come apart at their flat "rivets" if too much pressure is exerted.
For plastic spools out of shape, for me it's a long-time fix. I put rolled up newspaper under their rims to extend slightly over-size and then leave for twelve months and check again. This amount of time usually does the trick.

re spools sent you a pm and a email paul and never got a reply I don't know why I bother posting on here its just a complete waste of my time buy them from where Maurice says and get ripped off with very very high postage charges

Film and Money simply don't mix any more David for the vast vast majority out there.

It's a mixture of oil and water for all too many sadly.

It's now, more than ever, a game only for the very very committed.

We all share daily disappointments surrounding the buoyancy of today's interest in the hobby and marketplace in general for various reasons David.

I've just learned not to expect anything of a definitive response to anything I'm ever selling that's decent, in today's collecting world.

It's a world full of the "owt for nowt" brigade these days.

Keep the faith David, know where you're time and efforts are best reserved for with your loyal customer base, that would be my advice based on this year's findings [Wink]
