Hi,
I've just bought my first super8mm projector (a Bolex SM 80 electronic), and have a few questions that I hope someone can answer me [Wink]

1. what is the best way to store films? (cold, warm, dry, wet, etc)
2. how do you splice a film? (I had a little accident first time I tried a film... it's now i 3-4 parts)
3. besides ebay, where can I buy films? I'm not talking about those £100+, but 200-400 feet films (cartoons, live action... anything goes)
4. other parts, like empty reels and cans, etc. Where can I get such parts?
5. does anyone have a usermanual (in .pdf or similar) for my projector that they can email me?
I think that is all I can think of at the moment.

Hi & Welcome!

1. what is the best way to store films? (cold, warm, dry, wet, etc)

Cold (up to 20°C is okay), dry, dark.

2. how do you splice a film? (I had a little accident first time I tried a film... it's now i 3-4 parts)

You'll need a "splicer" to cut the film:
http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Category:Splicers
The splicers is also used to apply the tape ("dry splicing") or to apply the glue (aka "cement") ("dry splicing").
(There are some more systems, but these are the two options for "amateurs" where you can still buy the tape and/or the cement.)
A typical dry splicer:

A typical wet splicer:

More details:

3. besides ebay, where can I buy films? I'm not talking about those £100+, but 200-400 feet films (cartoons, live action... anything goes)
4. other parts, like empty reels and cans, etc. Where can I get such parts?

A list sorted by country + some more internet portals at the end. (Flea markets and film fairs are missing of course):
http://super8wiki.com/index.php/Category:FAQ#Where_to_Find_Equipment.2C_Processing_and.2For_Telecine

5. does anyone have a usermanual (in .pdf or similar) for my projector that they can email me?

Links to webpages with manuals (but all lack your projector [Frown] at least you can download the manuals for similar projectors, e.g. the Bolex SP8):
http://www.super8.no/manuals.html
http://www.super8aid.net/projectors.html
http://www.film-tech.com/warehouse/index.php?category=2#8mm%20projectors
http://www.super8-projektor.de/index.php?site=downloads&kategorie=21
Of course contacting Bolex might help, too:

So much from my side - hope it helped a little bit,
Jörg

Hei, Jon Anders velkommen.

A resource for new material reels and stuff is Andreas website www.smalfilm.no
I sometimes sell or buy at QXL.no and also finn.no and also tradera.se have something if you dont mind postage to norway from sweden.

I use a tape splicer to splice films and find that very easy to use.
Do you just project films or do you shoot super 8 as well?

Btw, I may have some films I'm going to sell\trade I have to check.

Thanks Joerg and Knut! Your answers have been most helpfull! [Big Grin]

About the manual: I did contact Bolex, but they wanted 30euros, ant that is way to much for me. But thanks for the tips about similar projectors!

Knut: no, I don't shoot, only project. Would be fun to try shooting real film sometime though.

Hej Jon Anders!

I have a Universal 8 2 * 400 "The Sting" which you can have as a gift if you´ll only cover the postage to send it. It´s a perfectly OK movie, colours + sound are good, some scratches.

My e-mail

Cheers,
