With Small Format on the way out, can anyone let me know what Film For The Collector is like? Content, style, value for money etc.

I do buy film from Derann, but don't have any of these magazines.

Thanks

David

Derann's own 16 mm manager Steve Wellings edits this publication, and a superb job he makes of it too. A4 in size and professional looking, it has articles on film and film stars, projectors(normally courtesy of Tom Photiou of this forum), letters and a few sales/wants adverts. In the center, on different coloured paper, is Keith Wilton's Super 8 review, covering the B F C C, news from around the place and Keith's actual review of new (and sometimes used) prints. Put it like this; I've subscribed every year since 1997 and have never ever regretted it! Here is a contents lists from a past issue:

Issue Sep 2006
Techy Bits with Tom Photiou
Ray Harryhausen with Ged Jones
Classic Picture Houses; Elephant & Castle Trocadero
The BFG Column with Barry Attwood
Not So Silent Movies with Richard Stoner
Super 8 Film Review
Quiz Page
The Littlechild Scene (no longer writes, but was rather DVD biased)
Serial Star in His Retirement Years by The Late Bryan Haynes
Crossword
Letters & Ads

I'd say it has a rather 'basic' look compared to SmallFormat - which clearly has a very high level of design expertise, and it doesn't have anything about film-making (although Tony Schapps of the Widescreen Centre used to do an interesting column that was relevant to film-makers). However, I'd still say it's well worth supporting. I have every single issue in the binders that are still available; in the early days, it was actually the magazine of the 'Derann Film Club' which organised a few activities during the 1980's Super 8 revival.

Thanks Adrian, at no time did I think it was like Small Format, whilst I am a film maker I prefer to read about the collecting side of the hobby more.

I just wish to support companies that support us. I am looking forward to my first copy; are back issues available?
