Hey John, (and perhaps others), a question concerning the process involved in optical sound manufacturing, which would include both Super 8 or 16mm.

I have noted on optical sound Super 8, there will be times where the image on the film is faded, but the optical soundtrack isn't faded, and then there are times when the image has brilliant colors, but the soundtrack is faded to a purple, (and has, therefore, lost much of it's sound output).

Being that optical sound is printed on the film optically as well, why is it that the optical sound track can fade apart from the image, and, visa versa, the image fade apart from a pristine soundtrack?

I thank you for your time, folks!

Osi, on 16mm it is a separate track with silver added, this stopped it from fading amd reduced noise with incandescant exciter lamp reproduction. The track is applied at a different time in the printing process and is a hang-over from the B & W days.

35mm went over to cyan dye tracks a few years ago to cut out this costly and fiddly extra process and I presume 16mm did too.

I never did check an optical super 8 track to see if it was a single picture and track pass or a sep silver opt track. John would know.
