I've done this several times with my 400' with cartoons. I just "fast-forward" without threading to the cartoon I wanna watch, then manually thread from there and watch.
Never had problems

The idea of starting up that pinch roller and flyweel with footage that actually has a picture on it has always kind-of bothered me, but I've never seen any picture damage when I've had stop and re-start. ("STEEEVE!! THERE"S A PHONE CALL FOR YOUUUUU!!!")
(There's a clutch in there so the flywheel can get up to speed gradually without dragging the roller on the film.)
I guess the claw would have to slide along the film base until it finds sprocket holes to grab. This would make a mark, but outside the picture area.

I haven't done it lately, but used to do it all the time back in the 1970s and 80s with no problems...but I always allowed some cool off time for the lamp before stopping the film.
