Surely that is Ken and not Castle? How's the cutdown, BTW?

I bet the back of the box was originally from another film. Unless there is some unknown (to me) part of 8mm history where Castle handled this. It's possible!

I bet the feature is very rare - I can't recall hearing of one being offered.

Regarding the cutdown, it's strange that some films of considerable stature, like this one, were never released with sound. Another good example would be Curse of the Demon.

This was originally released by RKO so was probably released by Mountain who had the rights .

Tom - I'm curious whether your 4 x 400' seems edited a bit. I don't suppose it's the 87 or 85 min versions mentioned on IMDB, but apparently there was an 81 min reissue version that I suppose could just fit if they were full reels.

I just took a look at the leader on my feature print and there's no information. I'll put it on rewinds and see if the tail offers any clues.

That silent 200 footer is from Ken Films.

I got "Thing" recently, have yet to go through it, but it was on five 400-footers of varying fullness in plain white boxes. No clue as to who released this.

Thomas ...

Does the image quality change about two thirds of the way through the film? I have a copy of that feature on laserdisc, and for some strange reason, the image quality suddenly looks dupey and then, after a few minutes, the image quality is right back up there.

Just curious.

Hi Tom,
that was me. I have an American 16mm TV print and after "The Thing" is destroyed a "The End" title is superimposed over the action. All of the wonderful "watch the skies" dialogue is missing. This is all professionally optical printed but I can't for the life of me work out why the end scene would be cut, unless it was for running time issues.

The change in quality comes because when the film was re-released ...they decided to cut several little scenes, most notably scenes surrounding and including the famous bit with Nicki tying up the Capt. on their "date". Maybe they were cutting so it could be shown with something else for a double feature. At any rate, for some reason, the masters of that scene , when they were excised..., haven't reappeared.... some 16mm prints made early in the TV era still had those scenes. I remember seeing them in the late fifties. But when they got around to trying to put the film back together again as it was originally released, they couldn't find the 35mm scenes..and so, the version you see on Turner and on laser ...used 16mm footage that still existed ..so the sound quality declines and those few minutes are less sharp and a bit darker. That is what I was told happened. Today, most prints, including the Super 8 feature that was licensed ...do not have those scenes at all. I've searched for years to find a 16mm print with them intact...but I keep being outbid by folks with more money than I have.

Once got the Ken 200'er off Ebay and the original owner had edited out all of the creature scenes!

Must say I was a little dissapointed.
