Good day to all from Greece. This is my first post here.
I just discovered this forum. It's really a great place to discuss film matters. Congratulations to all participants!
I have an Elmo SC-18 Hi Vision 8 mm Sound Projector, which has been out of use for several years due to my (very) frequent absence from home. When I tried to operate it recently, I discovered that its mechanism is functioning half the way (the take-up reel is not turning). I suspect that this is a matter of broken (or loose) belt due to aging.
I have seen here a similar thread from a member (Joe Balitzki), requesting information of how to replace the motor (and other) belt of this projector. I have followed it and I gathered the - very helpful, indeed - instructions and photos in it.
However, I considered that a Service Manual of this projector would be more than useful to have, in case of future maintenance needs. I am therefore seeking for a - free - Service Manual.
Furthermore, I am also looking for replacement parts, belts especially. I have found several auctions at ebay, some of them ridiculously cheap and some expensive (for two belts only).
Several questions come up to my mind in this case:
For example, what if I choose to buy the really cheap belts kit (two belts only)? Is there any risk that these are aged belts and therefore subject to fail? Should I go for the expensive ones?
Has anyone an opinion about it?

By the way, I have the Instruction Manual of the SC-18 scanned and saved in PDF. If anyone needs it, I can send it to an email address for free, of course.
I have also discovered this thread of Brad Miller. I wonder how I can send my scanned manual to his "Warehouse", to become available to everyone.

I just saw your post. Thanks for your words. I am going to send you a PM and email, if this is OK with you.
During the years I have developed a standard policy to get and own the service manuals for most of my home electronic devices (and beyond). It has proved to be very useful, especially when time is passed and maintenance and/or repairs are necessary and there are no qualified technicians to do it. However, for the older components this is not easy all the times.
The Elmo SC-18 had been used at home quite often (sometimes extensively), especially when my children were still young. We used to play ready-made 8 mm films, some of them extracts from real cinema large works and most of them stored on 15 to 20 minutes reels. We also enjoyed our own small films, shot with my Canon 514XL-S Super-8 sound camera, which now must be gathered together and be sorted and grouped appropriately.
Unfortunately, these days are passed and I can see now how wonderful they were. I need to go back to them and the Elmo is the most significant component for this. Therefore, my very first step should be the correct and complete maintenance of the SC-18. This is where a service manual gets in. I will continue searching for it and I hope I get it at the end.
Meanwhile, the Instruction Manual is available for anyone, wanting it. It can be sent with email, as I did for Jean-Marc and I am going to do for Winbert tonight.

Good evening to all, again
I decided to go ahead and buy from ebay the Service Manual for my SC-18. It wasn't cheap, it costed me almost $38.00 (including shipping to Greece), but I felt like having no alternative, in case I really need to make the SC-18 fully operational again. I believe it will take a few days to arrive at my home, but this is expectable.
Anyway, after having read the relevant thread, where Jean-Marc Toussaint has provided some very useful photos and info about belt replacement, I noticed that there are three (3) belts inside the projector.
Subsequently, following Jean-Marc's suggestions, I found that the seller "isellprojectorbelts", plus one more seller at ebay, both do offer a set of two (2) - not three (3) - belts, claiming they are BRAND NEW.
Let's say that I initially accept their claiming and buy the belts.
- Am I going to have trouble, by NOT having the third belt?
- Is that 3rd belt also subject to aging and failing, as the other two selling ones?
- If it really needs to be replaced, where am I going to find one?
Please, forgive for asking so many questions. It is true that I haven't still tried to open the projector and form a firm opinion about its condition, therefore some of my current questions may seem stupid. But I really would like to be better prepared, before I face an unexpected surprise.
