To Doug or anybody else who would have the lists ...

Could somebody post a list of ALL the specifically "Cinevision" brand prints?

These are both good and bad. The good side is that I have never seen a cinevision print that didn't have a very sharp focus and they were top notch. they also were properly "cropped" on both side edge, to give you the full scope image, (which you do lose just a little of with your average scope image)

Really, the only real downside to these prints was the use of poor film stocks that tend to not age well, (depending on the specific release). Ben Hur 3X400, while a very good edit with exceptional sharpness, has tended to not age well, while the 1X400 ft release, has tended to age much better, (better film stock).

The 200ft cartoon releases have tended to be on good film stocks, and they also tended to release a variety of titles, such as the very rare Mr. Magoo scope cartoons, (one of which I have with beautiful color, "Magoo Beats the Heat"), As well as a few rare Droopy cartoons one of which "One Droopy Knight", is extremely hard to find, but they released it!

I could be wrong, but I feel that one of hardest to find Cinevision prints is "Star Wars Part 2". It is the same cut as the later release of Part 2, which wasn't a cinevision release.

I'd love to see a list of everything that was released as Cinevision prints!

Only one of my Tom and Jerry's has any fade whatsoever, but then I might have been pretty lucky.

Anybody out there own the Cinevision print of the 400ft Star Wars Part 2? I've heard that it was on film stock that doesn't hold up well ...

While the normally "scene" Star wars Part 2 in scope has held up very well, (mine has no fade whatsoever)

Osi,

I don't have a complete list of the Cineavision prints, but this is what I came up with.

Digests (400')

Airport
Airport 75
Ben Hur (3x400')
Born Free
The Car
Jaws 2
Midway
Rooster Cogburn
Star Wars (2nd digest)
Swashbuckler
Two Minute Warning

Cartoons (200')

Barbecue Brawl (T&J)
Blue Cat Blues (T&J)
Downbeat Bear (T&J)
Good Will To Men
Magoo Beats the Heat
Magoo Goes Overboard
Millionaire Droopy

I have the Cineavision Star Wars. I haven't screened it in some time so I'll have to check. I remember it looking pretty good with just slight color fade.

Interesting. I find Cineavision prints to be generally poor compared to the sharpness provided by other 'Scope prints. Ben-Hur was an exception.

My Cineavision 3x400 print of Ben Hur was completely magenta. I sold it, I prefer the 400ft digest (which hasn't faded).
Star Wars was excellent, although a bit grainy, Two Minute Warning and Jaws 2 look fine.

Osi,

I possess a complete full length print of STAR WARS printed in the Cineavision format which I purchased from a USA seller on Ebay a few years ago.

I don't think it's an 'official' release but it's most definitely optically printed to place the 2.35:1 original into the Super 8mm frame and is very good (including focus) all things considered and doesn't suffer from the top and bottom frame cropping of the Derann feature release. It also has 'open captions' on the Cantina sequence!

I must agree with John as I too have found the focus on Cineavision prints is generally soft with a couple of exceptions, also there's more grain all of which is no doubt a result of the optical reduction printing method.

Good heavens!!

That must be an extreme rarity Rick. never heard before of any cinevision feature releases. You did say it may have not been an official release by cinevision.

Where on earth did you get that?

I had a STAR WARS print like that also, but it was soft and had a lot of negative dirt(white spots) on it. I just assumed it was a later print from Derann but as I recall it didn't have Cinevision's logo either. The softness probably comes from the printing. A 16mm negative is used then reduced through a beam splitter for multiple super 8mm prints(2 or 4).

Osi,

the brand is spelled "Cineavision" with an "a" in-between (although I think there was indeed a British (?) label called "Cine Vision Home Movies").

Doug,

"Airport", as Universal 8's first scope release, was not printed in Cineavision but in standard Super 8 scope, i.e. there was no masking.
Are you sure there were anamorphic prints of "Midway"? I know that this was announced in scope (as well as other U 8 titles like "Earthquake" and "Tell them Willie Boy is Here"), but have never seen a Cineavison print on offer.

Shouldn't we add the following titles to the list:

-Ben-Hur (400')
-Doctor Zhivago (3x400')
-Blue Hawaii (400')
-Dracula '79 (400')
-Guns for San Sebastian (400')
-Force Ten From Navarone (400')
-2001 - A Space Odyssey (8x400')
-Forbidden Planet (6x400' - only four test prints)

Animex offered also a couple of trailer reels in Cineavision.

Best,

Eberhard

Eberhard,

You are absolutely right about "Airport". I assumed it was a Cineavision print.
I've seen a scope digest of "Midway" offered at least twice on various used lists.
Do you have a scope version of Dracula '79? I never knew there was one!

I still am quite intrigued by that full feature of Star wars.

I'd love to see a screen capture from it!

Even more optical processing went into a Cineavision release than a standard 'Scope release. More optical processes resulted in degrading the quality at each stage.

I too thought there was a Cineavision 400' version of the Dracula promo.

John,

You are right, there was a Cineavision print of the "Dracula" promo, as I've had it quite a few times on my lists, it's a shame they didn't get around to doing some of the 2x400's as well.

John,

They must have had fairly high standards then, as i was looking frame by frame at my Tom and Jerry "Touche Pussycat"
(cineavision, there, got it!), and it is as sharp as anything I have seen on Super 8!

I'm sure your right though.

Were some of those Universal 8 releases, (such as "Rooster Cogburn and the Lady") Cineavision prints, actually official Cineavision prints, just released by Universal 8?

Osi,

I heard on the "2001: A Space...." release, Dr. van Tettering had a number of reels re-done a few times times until he was happy with the neg for that reel, and if you have ever seen the "2001" feature it holds up well even today, shame they didn't use better stock at the time, as the Ken full frame prints have held up better than the Cineavision scope prints.

I have the "Dracula '79" promo reel. There's no sticker on the artwork specifying "Cineavision", but it is masked with black borders on the top and bottom throughout the presentation. Is the 2X 400'er the same way?

Yes, but I felt sure there was a 'Scope version of your 400ft reel. Perhaps I was imagining it.

Brad, your print is "letterboxed" ie - 1.66, 1.85 or 2.35 ratio fit inside the 1.33 super 8 frame - most of the times, it's an hybrid between 1.66 and 1.85.

Having a look around thought I would add to this topic.

I bought a trailer reel from Animex it had the following

Where Eagles Dare
Ice Station Zebra
Captain Nemo and the Underwater City

I love the smell of film in the morning.
