Hello all,

I'm brand new to this forum and the world of Super 8, and hoping you can help me with a quick projection question.

I recently picked up a Honeywell Elmo FP8-C Dual 8 projector. I'm hoping to use it for review of newly-shot film prior to professional transfer on a creative project, and basic transfer of a handful of old home movies to video.

The projector seems to work well, but is missing the heat shield glass that normally sits between the lamp and film. How significant a danger is this?

I recognize that there is always some risk involved in running old film through an old projector, but this one seems clean and otherwise in good repair, and has been fine when tested projecting a few sacrificial reels of film. I'm willing to accept a small amount of risk, but don't want to be stupid about this either. Is there any chance I can safely work around the missing heat shield with a bit of caution (e.g. not using the still frame function of the projector, immediately turning the lamp off in the event of a jam or misfeed?)

I should also mention that I've reached out to a few projector parts suppliers, but haven't been able to find a replacement heat shield. If anyone can recommend a good source for that, I'd also be very grateful for that information.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Tom

I have actually removed the heat shield glass from my Sankyo projectors. It gave me a clearer picture. If you are careful as you have already described ... it shouldn't be a problem. I have a junker FP series projector...I'll check to see if it has the glass.

Thank you very much, Joe and Janice. The previous discussions were all quite informative.

I think I'll give it a go with my projector as-is, but Janice if you do happen to come up with an FP glass shield that you'd be interested in letting go, I'd still be quite interested!
