Hi,
I recently purchased a Bell & Howell projector at a garage sale. I want to use it to identify what's on some reels of film I've had for years. The projector seems to work great. It runs smoothly in forward and reverse, it autoloads the film, and the bulb lights. I tried projecting onto a piece of white cardboard about 3 feet in front of the projector, but all I see is a brownish blob. There's a knob along the lens that moves it in and out, so I assume that's the focus. (Sorry, I've never used one of these before, so I have a lot to learn before I'll even be a noobie.) Although the lens moves in and out, I never get anywhere close to being able to see anything. Is there a minimum distance I need to be in order to focus? Also, although the light works, it doesn't seem terribly bright. If I hold my hand in front of the lens it kind of looks like the light you would get from a 40 watt light bulb, kind of yellowish. Is this normal? It's the correct bulb (DJL) and the bulb says 150 watts. Do these bulbs dim with age - I would assume they just go boom. If it would help, I can post pictures.
Thanks for any help!

It is not normal, Mike. The light outpout should be stronger than what you describe. The minimum distance depends on the kind of lense that is on your projector. Most of 16 mm projectors have no zoom so you may have a lens intended for a long distance projection. But this is only speculation, more informations would help.

Check the lens first. Depending on how this projector was stored, the lenses can fog up pretty badly. I had an old B&H with the same problem - lens elements were almost brown hence the poor light output. Unfortunately if it is in the inner elements there's not much you can do about it.

The lens says Bell & Howell, Lens made in Japan, 18mm-30mm, f / 1.6. When I look into the lens from the small side it's totally unfocused, just see light and shadows. Looking into the larger end I can see what I'm looking at; it's just upside down. I don't know if that's normal or not.
I also have an old Emdeko projector that I bought used in the early 80s to show these films. It's what I was hoping to use now, but the take up reel doesn't turn (both spools go on the same spindle. The outer one turns, but the inner one doesn't. Opened it up but didn't find any broken belts or anything.) Anyway, when I turn on the Emdeko it projects a bright, sharply rectangular light. With the B&H right next to it, the light is about half as bright, and much more scattered and undefined. Not sure what to do next. I know one of the reels has my wedding, and I'm hoping to surprise my wife for our anniversary next month. I really appreciate the help!

The Bell & Howell lens just could be really dirty on the inside or mostly likely has fungus. In either case the lens would have to be disassembled and cleaned. You could temporarly remove the fungus...but it will most likely come back.

I'm not familiar with the model of Emdeko you are describing...but just a thought. Did you try running a reel of film? Most projectors have a spindle for the supply reel (that's the film you are showing) and another spindle for the take-up reel. When the projector is going forward (threading and playing) ...only the take-up reel moves. When the projector is set to reverse or rewind...only the supply reel turns. Check to see if this is the case with yours.

I don't know this specific model, neither but on some projector, you have a knob that allows you to save the lamp and gives 10 % light less than normal. This selector if in many cases well visible but it may be inside. 10 % is not a lot but check also the voltage selector, in most cases it is (also to save the lamp and to avoid overvoltage) not set on the actual voltage (for example it is set on 240 volts while your voltage is 220 volts). Check if there is not a too big difference between the voltage setting and your real voltage (on some projectors the motor will run at the right speed even with a wrong voltage but the lamp will react differently). I doubt that your problem comes from there but it will cost nothing to check.

I really appreciate the advice!!

Janice, I was able to remove the end of the lens, and a curved glass behind it. The glass behind that seems fogged. I tried to clean it but it's on the inside. Is that what fungus looks like? When the lens is in place the light is completely scattered. Even without film the light does not project a small rectangular shape - it's large and irregular. It appears that special tools are needed to open the lens further, so I'm not able to do that. I did find another similar lens online for not too much money, so I may give that a try.
The Emdeko has only one spindle. The take up reel goes on first, on a wider part of the spindle, and the supply reel goes on next, on a thinner part (with an adapter for Super 8). The reels then locks in place with a latch. Only the supply reel turns, both in forward and reverse. It turns clockwise in forward, and counterclockwise in reverse. The take up reel never turns. For reference, it's absolutely identical to this Keystone. The only difference is that the black and red label on the right side says Emdeko instead of Keystone.

Dominique, I've looked all over the B&H. I can't find anything to adjust either the brightness or the voltage.

Both projectors are really nice and clean and in great looking condition. I'd really like to get one of them working! Thanks again!

FOLLOW UP: I picked up a new lens on eBay. Arrived today. Looking through it, it was much clearer than the old one. Put it in the projector, and I'm now seeing my movies! Thanks to all for the help!
Now to see if I can get my other projector working...
