The Syracuse Cinefest is coming to an end. Next year, 2015, will be the 35th and final year of this wonderful event.

So sad to see this end. They do a very professional job on putting together this show. Changing technology and the readily availability of titles from dvds and downloading are to blame.

I think this is the best film show of its type in the U.S. Over the years the people of Syracuse that put this event on have developed a great relationship with the Library of Congress, the UCLA Film and Television Archives, the George Eastman House, the AFI, the BFI, Museum of Modern Art, the Mary Pickford Foundation, among others.

My hat is off to Gerry Orlando and all of the Cinephiles for their wonderful show. A very professional film show in the wonderful city of Syracuse. The staff of the Holiday Inn - Liverpool, also, do a great job.

I will definitely be there in 2015.

If you are planning to attend the Syracuse Cinefest it would be best to go ahead and make your hotel reservation at the Holiday Inn - Liverpool. People are doing so early as this final event is expected to be well attended. I've made mine already.

The date for 2015 Cinefest is March 19, 20, 21, and 22. It is a great program of old silent films and early talkies; many very rare. Most are presented in 16mm. There are always several dealers in 16mm and 8mm films as well as other cinema related items.

Cinefest is great.

Phil Sterling was the pioneer of Cinefest. He had private showings year round in addition to the yearly Cinefest too.

At one convention the group projected the last five minutes from Laurel & Hardy's The Music Box. It had to be the worst quality print that I had ever seen but it did not matter, because the audience was electrified showing their love for the boys and and responded with huge thunderous laughter that took the roof off the auditorium.

After the clip, The Society presented Phil with a special gift of a player piano in appreciation for his many years (25?) of continued dedication.

Kudos to Gerry for his command of the event since Phils' passing.

I wish that a group of people would pick up the mantle to keep it going.

Isn't it great that we can all communicate about this great
hobby that we love!

The news was indeed sad. I found out when I received a letter in the mail from Cinefest in the mail. I thought it was a little early to receive a flyer for 2015's CineFest. And while I'm no psychic, I thought maybe it was a letter saying that this years Cinefest was going to be cancelled. Instead, it stated that 2015 would be the last year of Cinefest. Sad? Yes I was. After all, I've been going to this event for the last ten years. I looked forward all year to seeing old friends, making new ones and buying, selling and trading of 16mm film. I'll miss discussing this wonderful hobby with like minded people.

As you all know, people not into film don't "get it" when it comes to this hobby. All of my friends here in Delaware give me a blank, uncomprehending stare if I mention 16mm film or old films in particular. But mention the latest DVD release and they croon with joy. So it's wonderful to associate with folks who do "get it" because we speak the same language. And yes, there will still be Cinesea and I'll probably go to Cinevent (if I can get the time off)but I'm sad because it'll be the end of an era. But as cliched as it sounds: All good things must come to an end. But I'll always have my memories of Cinefest and no one can take that away from me.
