Hi All,
I am not too familiar with this company but have seen them more and more on ebay etc.... I am just wondering what people might know about these releases, and the quality. I only have one film so far with this name, so know really little of them.

What are the best companies in order:
1. Derann
2. Blackhawk
3. Columbia
4. Red Fox
5. Who else???
Cheers,
Matt

Matt,
Along with any replies you get to your post here; try the 'search' feature at the top of the page. Just type in the name of a company (Red Fox, Derann, etc.), and you'll get lots of info from past threads [Smile]

Mat,

It depends on what titles you are looking for.

If you are after B/W films and the title was released by Blackhawk, I would suggest to get this version. FYI some Hal Roach films (e.g Laurel & Hardy, Little Rascals, etc) were released by Walton, Derann and Blackhawk.

As I said in the other post, later prints (1980s) released by Red Fox & Derann are much better than their early years. So if we are talking 1980s print both shared the same quality. But for the early years prints, it will really be various in quality.

I never found any full length from Columbia is free from fade, so unless you are after a particular Columbia's title (which is not be available from other company), I would not suggest to get them.

But I knew film that is always good in quality (no print I found to be faded) is the one released by Kempski (and of course CHC because this company started printing film after 1990s). For your reference: Kempski Prints?

Below some screen shots from Derann and Kempinski prints for comparison:

Wizard of Oz, the released by Derann
 -

Glen Miller Story, the released by Derann
 -

Gone with the Wind released by Derann
 -

Jason and the Argonauts released by Derann
 -

Meet me in St Louis released by Derann
 -

Abbys, the released by Derann
 -

Independence Day, the released by Derann
 -

West Side Story, the released by Kempski
 -

ps: the above screen shots are originally taken from Super 8mm prints. I collected them from Ebay from a seller in Canada. None above prints are mine.

Please note that some titles (eg. Wizard of Oz, That Entertainment, Dirty Dozen, 7th Voyage Sinbad, etc ) were released by major companies such as; Ken films, Universal 8, Walton Film, Mountain Films, MGM, etc. But later they were also released by small (individual) companies such as Derann, CHC, Red Fox, DCR, Kempski, etc.

IMHO those prints from major companies tend to be pale/warmth/faded and do not have deep black or strong skin colors plus the saturation is so weak, while prints from individual which were printed after 1980s mostly are always good.

cheers,

I reckon they are about as good as it gets on Super 8 Winbert outside of the Derann / Disney contract.

If you are to be too fussy about the above screen shots then maybe digital projection is for you.

These Screen shots from Winberts associate look pretty darn good to me!

About the usual standard you can expect from low fade Red Fox / Derann / Kempski prints I would say.

Thanx for the info all!

Yes, I only have one red fox and it is an older Hal Roach. Actually, I really only collect little rascals and Laurel & Hardy really...I have some various other things(3 stooges, and some cartoons)...but nothing really in colour to compare.
Those snapshots above look really fantastic to my eyes. My only colour film i have other than a couple cartoons is a columbia release of Mysterious Island, which is mostly red now.

So basically, since i am currently really interested in older b/w comedies, i guess i am probably doing good trying to find Blackhawks. 99% of my 50 or so movies are blackhawk.
Thanx for the info!
Matt

However 3 Stooges are not available from Blackhawk. In this regard you can rely only from Columbia (although Derann and Mountain films also released them but they are not always good)

Thanx Winbert. You are correct! My 3 three Stooges are Columbia and very good prints!!!
I have yet to buy a Derann print. I haven't found anything that tickles my fancy yet. I have weird tastes i suppose and really like Super 8's and such for watching movies as old as possible, because i think so much came from the old actors.
For example, one of our family favourites for years has been Gilligan's Island(which i don't believe i've ever seen on reels)...but until we started watching Laurel and Hardy's, we never realized that Skipper and Gilligan get almost ALL their antics from LH, and maybe LH got it from someone even earlier.... This is why i buy movies, to learn interesting things. The Slapstick title and similar from blackhawk that have good history are things i would like more of. I like Fatty Arbuckle too...

I have a "New 3 Stooges" tv cartoon called "Soupermen" from Red Fox and it's beet tomato red. No color left in it at all. I got it some time between '79 and '80. A shame, too because both the box and film are in mint condition, but who am I going to show it to beside myself?

Derann released a lot of L&H titles around the mid to late 1980s - I have a few. It would be interesting to know if experts on collecting L&H consider some of these prints to be better than Blackhawk equivalents. I expect some are.
