Hi all.

I have a strange problem. I am using my projector as an economical way to digitize old film. However, when I project I get what looks like a large hair on the bottom left of the project image. I have cleaned the gate, the shutter and the lens but it is still there. Now for the funny bit. With no film in the projector, the crud is not there, even at differing focus positions. It does not move during projection, indicating it is not on the film. Would someone be able to advise me where to look? I have used a hand held blower to clean the gate as well as a brush on the gate and shuttter.

Regards

Steve

Hi Steve,

we got this [Wink] ... I am no pro myself either but have mastered the art of trial and error so let's compare notes. My first guess is that it could be an emulsion scratch on the film itself depending on the color... Your observation [Smile] ?

Cheers,
Elyas

Thanks Elyas. I don't believe so, it is dark, and not shaped like a scratch. I recall it is on multiple films. I have got round it by zooming in a little bit. After a lot of trying to clean the fim gate, more crud got in. Luckily on this projecter the film gate is removable as it is a dual film type unit. Maybe my hand pumped blower is not strong enough. I'll buy some canned air tomorrow and try that. I can't see it with a 10x magnifier, but on screen it is obviously magnified much more than 10x. I'm pretty certain it is on the gate as after cleaning it does change position. I just can't seem the get rid of it!

Steve, it may be that the films themselves need cleaning?

While projecting the film adjust the framing knob so the frame line comes into view from the bottom and if the "hair" stays put you know it is in the gate of the projector...if it moves up with the picture then it sounds like a dirty gate in the camera and you can't do anything about that. You said it is on multiple films...are these all home movies shot with the same camera? It seems odd that it is there with the film but not there without film. That tells me it is the film.
