You may have recently seen a few sealed Super 8 movies from "Starjoy Films" pop up and immediately get purchased on eBay. "What on earth are these?" you might well have asked yourself. I certainly did. So I purchased one. A few minutes later, they were all gone.

The one I bought was "Hanky Panky." There was one other copy available from the same seller, as well as something called "Cry Uncle." "Hanky Panky" arrived today--a 340' color sound film. It appears to be a digest of a West German soft-X feature. There are no actor credits (and I didn't recognize anyone) but the print did credit Hemisphere Films. So, I suspect it may be a digest of this:

Starjoy Films (listed as "Star Joy Films" on the back of the box) seemed to be based in Bogota, NJ. Based on the fact that this is less than four miles from Fort Lee, and that the box uses the same red "Super 8" label in the upper right corner that Ken Films used in later years, I can't help but wonder if this was Ken's attempt at a separate softcore imprint. Other Starjoy titles listed on the back of the box are:

BORDELLO
CRY UNCLE (Presented by Lee Hessel)
1001 DANISH DELIGHTS
SWINGING STEWARDESSES

The latter was another West German softcore flick released in the US by Hemisphere, so the overall trend here is clear. I might add--and this is the height of conjecture--than if Ken did license a bunch of sex films from Hemisphere and release them as "Starjoy Films," that might help (sort of) explain why their release of NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST used cover art derived from Hemisphere's BEAST OF BLOOD. Too bad they didn't go nuts and release digests of a bunch of those Filipino horror movies from Hemisphere! (Although there is at least a German digest of BEAST OF BLOOD out there...)

I have one of "Starjoy" entitled "1001 DANISH DELIGHTS"

I have also the same feeling that this was released by the same Ken Films (and MGM as they were also located at Bogota, NJ).

What impress me is the quality of the print. It is unfaded until to date. Here is the screen shot of my "Starjoy":

What a lovely color, right. I wish Ken film made ALL they released like the above quality...! [Frown]

I sold a feature print of 'Hanky Panky' recently, it was still in pretty good condition after all these years, it's amazing what still turns up!

So, is "Hanky Panky" the actual theatrical title, and it's just not on IMDb? Or is it a retitling of something else?

I just picked up SWINGIN' STEWARDESSES and the color is bit faded, but still not at all bad.

I have the feature of Cry Uncle. Directed by Avildsen and so not looking like Karate Kid. It's not porn, but a lot of boobs and necrophilia. Weird, kinky and slightly funny

Cry Uncle was reviewed by Eddie Sammons in "Super 8 Collector #20" at the time of the 4th BFCC 1978 as being made in 1971 and distributed by Starjoy (UK Mountain). His conclusion was "Excellent colour and sound - both wasted on a labourious and unfunny skinflick which can't decide what it wants to be. Don't waste money of even time on this one" Print A Sound A

Actually a better review than the one he gave Derann's "Miss Leslie's Dolls" in the same edition, described as a "Shoddy Opus" Print C Sound B/C, so maybe "Cry Uncle" was worth the time to watch.

Ran it in my club and mostly people seemed to enjoy the quirkyness. I'd give it 5/10
