Hello all - I recently picked up an Elmo k-100sm in supposedly excellent condition (new bulb, belt) on Ebay to do some digital transfers at home. I first noticed that the film is not being taken up automatically - I need to help it along to push it to the "claw". Once up and running, the image seems to oscillate in and out of focus. I believe there may be some slight north/south/east/west movement as well but the focus is the big problem for me. It is the same with both 8 and super 8 film. From my uneducated perspective it seems like it may be a problem with the film "claw" itself. Before I really make a mess and start taking things apart, I was wondering if anyone might have some advice. Thanks in advance!!

The first thing I would check would be that the film gate is closing properly and sprung correctly, that would make the contact with the claw bad and focus uneven.

Thanks everyone - I discovered that one of the springs on the film gate was bad and there was a screw loose on an arm connected to the film guide (the mechanism that puts compression on the side of the film as its going through). So I tightened that screw down until it broke (YAY!!!) and I was not happy. Then I realized that that arm is really only needed as the film is being threaded, so I pressed down on the arm to thread the film manually, then I used a little finger pressure to maintain the position of the film gate during projection and I got a decent capture!!! I also had to go in and change the governor on the pot-meter (or rheostat - not sure what it's called) so I could slow it down to 20fps. I'm using a sony HDR-CX760 at 60p, then I slow it back down to 18fps (90%) with Sony Vegas. Thank you guys!!

Just as a follow up - I'm wondering if anyone knows where I might be able to find replacement screws and springs for the film guide/gate.
