I plan to attend Classic's Open Day on the 20th of May, but as rail tickets are expensive, I thought I might enquire this here. Is there any fellow collector that will attend too, going by car from the B'ham/Midlands area, or maybe from further south & could possibly pick me up in Bham? Obviously I'm happy to contribute to the petrol costs of both journeys to and from Cleethorpes!

Out of my curiosity, so in the UK driving is still cheaper than buying the most economical train ticket? Of course in the case only 1 - 2 (max) person ridings. Anything more than 2 persons is definetely cheaper by car everywhere.

National Rail web-site quotes £59.40 for the return journey from Birmingham to Cleethorpes on the 20 May. It takes 3 hours and 40 minutes, with a change at Sheffield.
It is 144 miles by road.

I remember it took me just a tad over two hours to get to Phil's old shop by the coastline a few years back.
This was a mid morning, mid week journey from Manchester.

There was a motorway fatality very sadly that day on the opposite carriageway which meant the journey was a little bit delayed of course.

I'd guess it would take around 3.5hrs by car from Birmingham keeping within the speed limits, on a good day.

Personally I don't think £60 return is too bad considering the distance involved.
It would cost me a similar amount to do the 300 mile round trip by car these days and a lot less stressful by rail.

Yep, the prices are ok if you book well in advance, if you leave it too close to the date that price will double, so if you book now you'll be fine. [Wink]

By splitting the tickets at Doncaster and using a railcard I booked for £28 return from London on Advance tickets. You have to change there anyway - another quirk of the system it was more expensive booking direct.

Yanis, The Classic Home Cinema website says the open day is on 22nd May NOT 20th May. Would be pretty disappointing to travel all the way from Greece on the wrong day!

Although having said that, the 22nd is a Monday and CHC is normally closed on a Monday, so maybe you should double check.

Brian,I don't have a railcard so would still need more than that money to pay the fare. Still a split ticket is a decent option.
Gary, I won't be coming from Greece-I live in Bham.
Am still looking for someone to share the petrol if possible. It would be in the interest of both myself & whoever would pass through Bham.

Apologies Yanis. I was just going on your posting details that are displayed at the side.

The railcard situation in the UK really makes no sense. There are so many different categories. I don't know why they don't just let anyone purchase one.

The best option is to get one of those advance single one way outward and single journey back. You can get a good deal but the snag is that they are only valid on the selected trains. Miss the named train and you will have to pay for another (full price) ticket. Some good deals on first class though sometimes.

As i see it's hard to find someone going to Phil's from B'ham, just
giving it a last go-is someone going through Sheffield maybe? Trains from Bham change there for Cleethorpes, so could do liaise there too if it suits anyone.

Yanis, you could possibly consider missing the May one and going in August as that's the big one with the optional meals on Fri/Sat and the show at Phil's house. I went last year and it was a great weekend - I've never spent so many hours looking through films for sale - and there were fantastic offers and bargains. As the cheapest rail tickets go on sale three months in advance, they should be available any day now, if they are not already.

...issue is, Adrian, in August I'm always on hols-or about to go, so sorting last details that keep me busy; plus, I now have booked a few titles & no good leaving them at Phil's until then...
