I'm visiting Austria soon so I thought I'd watch my Derann cut down of The Sound of Music to get me in the mood. I bought my print second hand and it's on Agfa stock and it has a blueish cast to it - worse in the indoor scenes but the outdoor scenes are less blue. Still, it's a really good digest and works well.

The first 600ft of my print is mounted on an 800ft reel and there is a splice just after the very first sequence with Maria singing the title song... and another splice just after the nuns are discussing what to do about Maria. I assume that this is where the replacement titles that Derann printed had been inserted by a previous owner. I was surprised just how long the inserted sequence continued after the titles had ended... does anyone have these titles and can confirm there's quite a bit of footage after the titles proper have ended?

The end of the first reel ends in the middle of Do-Re-Mi, which continues on the second reel. I think I've read somewhere that a longer version of this song was released by Derann which could also be inserted into the 3 x 600ft version. Is this the case? I'd be interested in tracking down a copy but how do the colours match up? The titles match quite well but aren't quite so blue as the main part of the film.

Just to add to this peculiarity, I have Derann F/L and the first reel is faded...pinkish/reddish...although it is on AGFA [Mad]

There is a 'scope 200 Footer of "Do-Re-Me", the color and sound are quite good. It begins with a brief snip of the main title and then jumps to Maria and the children on a balcony overlooking Salzburg learning about musical notes, then of course the song begins. It's complete all the way up to them coming up the steps at the very end.

-our print actually belongs to my wife, and I really doubt she's looking to sell!

It's kind of cool to go to Salzburg and then see "Sound of Music", after you do you keep seeing backgrounds and recognizing places you've been.

We took the Sound of Music bus tour. A lot of it is the Guide explaining that even though the Von Trapps are real people, the story is adapted as a musical and not completely the way it actually happened. (Examples: in real life they'd been married for years, Maria was actually the disciplinarian and the escape was really with forged papers and train tickets to Italy.)

-he told us one time he was standing at the base of the stairs awaiting tips as the tourists de-bussed, and this woman walked up to him, looked him in the eyes and said "You've ruined my LIFE!"

Good story Steve! I'm visiting the Tyrol but the film showed the Austrian mountains off very well. It's a film that needs to be projected in Scope!

Unfortunately a lifetime seeing it on television doesn't do it justice for the average viewer.

The opening sequence is shown in Derann's "This is 'Scope". It is great!

Note: we took the ski-lift-thingy up to the top of that mountain, and my wife sang the song. I filmed it in Kodachrome!

What many people don't understand about this movie is the rocky relationship it has had with the Austrian people.

For one thing when the film crews showed up in Salzburg, they didn't know that it is illegal to display the symbols of the Third Reich without some official permission. They started hanging banners in public places while they were filming and there was an uproar over it. They were asked to leave eventually and there's a lot more Los Angeles footage in there than they originally planned.

There was also an earlier German Language film about the Von Trapps which was quite a bit more documentary than S.O.M. but of course the Rogers and Hammerstein version has became THE story to most people (-especially that lady on the bus.)

The "popularity" of this movie over there is such that it took years for a German language dub to appear, and if you want to ride that bus tour, it's best you speak English!
