Hi Barry

I thought there was one of those Chinon DS 300 here at Projector Heaven but now that I have checked, it is actually a Eumig RS 3000. I bought it on ebay about 2 years ago because I like the TV type daylight screens.

It is complete and it works except for the motor which seems to be dead. How dissappointing... I will look at it again one day when I have the time.

Whats the issue with your Chinon DS 300 ?
I have serviced a few of those in the past and had to replace broken glass mirrors on the last one.

Hi Dogtor. I just bought it via an online auction and expect to get it today. I was suprised to see it as I never knew Chinon made one. I hope it has no problems! I'll keep the forum updated.

Cool looking projector Barry. I'd be interested in how it performs.

Barry, are you referring to the direct sound auto-300 with the front screen?

I have one of those machines. They are a fun little toy for watching films at your desk [Big Grin]

The only issue I have with mine is it developed an auto-feed problem a couple years. I don't quite remember the work around (what I had to hold during threading) but then it plays ok.

When you get your machine, you will most likely have to center the lens to the screen because I can about promise you the ride to your house will shake the lens enough that it will not be right. There are vertical and horizontal controls to do this.

Thanks Wayne. It comes with the manual so should be easy to figure out. I dislike auto threaders as there frequently seems to be problems with them.

Well, got the unit this afternoon. UPS timed it perfectly. Wife was off to Khol's sale when delivery came. What she doesn't know won't hurt me! Autothreads and runs fine. Like watching a TV? Definetly needs use of aux. speaker.

It does have a problem though. Front spindle does not turn in Reverse or for rewind. Must be a belt. May not be easy to get at. Any thougjts Dogtor?

Hi Barry
I don't think there is a rubber belt in the delivery arm but have a look if the cover pops off easily. It could be steel spring belts on that.
Check to see if the reverse clutch assembly is working properly.
The swinging reverse clutch bracket with its drive gear to the delivery arm may be stuck or it may even be a broken clutch pack.

With the rear cover off, you should be able to see if the reverse drive gear is swinging over and meshing with the delivery arm gear when rewind or reverse is selected.
Check that and let us know what you see. Maybe post a pic with the rear cover off showing a close up of the mechanicals.

Hope you find it's something easy.

Dogtor: Nothing is ever simple with me! The "Back" is not a simple cover but the whole mirror and screen assembly. From the top of this area I removed a storage area to reveal the large mirror and from there, some of the guts of the projector can be seen, but not the front pulley for the spindle. Looking down in there I can see some nylon gears that are nicely lubed and spinning. One is a worm gear meshing with another regular gear. There was an access panel over the top of the projector that was glued down. I popped that off and removed 4 screws thinking that was part of what held the mirror assembly to the projector, but nothing releases. However, from this view can be seen two parallel spring belts that are engaged. Also from the left side panel the pulley and spring belt for the take up spindle can be seen. What a huge mirror in this thing!

Hi Barry,

Here is a pic I saved when I last pulled apart one of these. The projector completely comes away from the screen part.

Barry, strike that part about the feed problem. I just dug out my machine and it fed right the first try just now [Razz] Now I hope it will rewind.

EDIT: Rewinds fine, and you will like the auto-stop upon the end of the film in both play and rewind modes...assuming you get the rewind working.

Barry, did you remove the single screw on the back of the feed arm to see if that spring belt is intact?

Thanks for that pic Frank. Shows what I need to remove.

Wayne, I'll remove that screw and cover some time today. I thought about doing that, but was hesitant not knowing what may pop out. If it is just the belt and pulley, should be easy to check. May not get to it today as I have some household projects to do.

EDIT: Well, you know I couldn't leave the projector alone and do the household stuff, didn't you? I checked the belt under the feed reel cover and it is fine. Found more screws to remove to get back off, but I'm missing one somewhere. Seems like it is in the area of the power off/on button. There were a couple small screws below that in the area where the little door flips open to allow projection on a big external screen, but still no go. Any thoughts Dogtor?

Well, got the back off, and can see the problem. One pic shows the entire back...very nice and clean. The second pic shows the problem. The little gear topmost is the gear that drives the feed reel. It is not engaging the bigger gear below it. The bigger gears spin depending on forward or reverse chosen. The bigger gears look like they mesh rather tightly. I'm hoping that the bigger gear can be adjusted upward slightly to mesh with the spindle gear. Perhaps the two screws are to be loosened and the gear moved up slightly by means of the lever behind the gear? Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Barry

Well done in pulling it all down like you have.

The pictures show normal forward project position. Thats why the big gear does not mesh with the small gear which drives the rewind.

When rewind is selected, the white gear should slide up on its greased screw guides and move against the small driven gear to drive rewind. The gap will now appear against the big plastic gear on the left when it stops driving the takeup reel.

See if you can move the swinging gear by hand. Find out why it won't slide into place under the momentum of drive rotation. It should be free to slide to either gear. Might need spraying with some lube oil.

See what you can find and let us know. Hopefully it will all be working fine when you re-assemble it after sorting out the rewind issue.
Good Luck.

DOGTOR FRANKARNSTEIN STRIKES AGAIN!
Dogtor: Thirty years and the grease that was around the two screws was as hard as a rock and may as well been glue. I removed one at a time, cleaned it and the slide, put a little super lube on the slides and it is working like a charm! Thanks a bunch for your help, Dogtor. Now to get it back together before I forget what screw goes where! Barry

Got it all back together with no problem. Did note that there was a little orange wire that was broken. It ran from a pad that was attached to a flat pad glued to the monitor assembly part that goes under the projector, directly under the circuit board. It is about 3 by 6 inches and about the thickness of thin cardboard. The wire is attached to the topside of the circuitboard.

I remember that pad and wire vaguely Barry and recall regluing down the pad to the case. That wire must be some sort of static discharge to earth. I think it will work OK without it but hook it up anyway.

We will now await your next report in this interesting case.
Your almost home safe. Dont forget where all the screws went.
There should be none remaining when you finish.

good luck till then

It's all together and working fine! It is a very nice machine. I wish it came with some sort of case or at least a dust cover. Thanks again Dogtor!

The information provided here will hopefully allow me to go straight to the problem ... fingers crossed [Smile]
