Mine was driving down to Ealing for Keith's BFCC with my better half and parents in tow for a day out. I joked that the only feature film that would interest me would be a full length 'scope copy of "Raiders of the Lost Ark".

I genuinely didn't know that such a print existed back then.

Anyway, we walk into the dealers hall and what does Ian at Perry's have on his stall? To say I was taken aback is an understatement. And at £220.00, how could I refuse? Still have that film and John Clancy did a fantastic stereo re-record on it for me. Happy times.

Another time I was at Blackpool after Dave Guest took over and a dealer had a box of random 200 footers in a box under the table. I had a look and found a Disney I had been looking for. The box was immaculate, but there was no price or condition, so I asked how much and he said, "Well, it's probably faded, so how about £2.00?"

The print was immaculate and with great colour!

How about your special convention memories?

My best convention memory is maybe a little...un-conventional!

Four years ago my wife had spinal surgery in the beginning of February and her recovery was downright awful. What was supposed to be maybe three weeks in the hospital and rehab stretched to eight.

At home I had a house, a grade school kid, a hospitalized wife and a full time job to deal with. On any given day you might find me cooking breakfast, shoveling snow, driving 60 miles to work and back, doing banking, dishes and laundry, supervising homework, buying food, troubleshooting, writing procedures, managing projects and visiting the hospital which was another 20 miles in the wrong direction.

Suffice it to say, by the time April came around all three of us were kind of a mess!

-but what about CineSea? Was it the right time to sneak out and leave my wife alone?

I decided with all we had been through, all three of us deserved a break and a change of scenery, so my son and I packed her and her crutches up and we went to Wildwood!

All of us, my wife included, had a great time. Everybody was very welcoming. We went out to breakfast and dinner with the rest, my wife thumbed through the prints for sale and found a couple for herself and at Saturday Night Show she sat there with the rest of us and for the first time in a long time I heard her laughing!

-just maybe there really is more to this than just the films! Life can get a little heavy some times and it's healthy to have a chance to step back and just enjoy something different.

All I ask is a wide screen and a projector to light her by...

Looking back Rob [Roll Eyes] [Smile] I think this convention in the city of Wellington was one I remember the most.

It started on the Friday evening and finished Sunday afternoon. What was special apart from great company etc, was a visit to the Kilbernie Unit to meet up with "Alex Funke ASC" who took us all through the Miniatures Unit. It was there Alex described what was involved is the setting up for certain scenes cameras/ green screen etc and the huge amount of detail work involved in the up and coming "King Kong" filming.

Later on when we ran the 35mm print of "King Kong". I recognized at our cinema on its release, some of the miniature sets that we had been looking at on that day [Cool] .
After lunch we then headed to the new "Park Road Post Studios" and after passing through the reception area, we went into one of the main sound theatres, where it was explained to us, how they mix all the different sound and effects. This place was certainly the state of the art technology. It was also demonstrated with an excerpt from the battle scene from Lord Of The Rings "Return Of The King"

Apart from the usual Saturday auction with lots of films and film projector, and a brilliant evening meal, the weekend was great. I think that where I picked up a Scope print of "West Side Story" on Elmo reels for $20 dollars..still haven't watched it [Smile]

Apart from the "Wellington Convention" we had one here in 2008 which included a Haggland Ride early on the Sunday morning at the Antarctic center. Both forum members Pat and Trevor were on that ride as well. I think I have a photo somewhere of us three.

That ride was really something, the only time your bum was on the seat was when the engine stated, after that we were hanging on for dear life in that thing...we were flying [Big Grin]

Fun times [Smile]

From the above mag with Special Guest Speaker Mr Alex Funke ASC at the evening meal. If I remember right he had been involved in the miniature work on "Total Recall"
 -

What I enjoyed the most of those conventions was the social side, as I was never really interested in looking for film bargains. It was really a chance to catch up, and have a jolly good time with like minded people.

My best convention memory was from 1988, when along with my brother Michael we attended our first ever Blackpool convention, and that year the special guest was Mr. Dynamation himself Ray Harryhausen , well it was a wonderful start to my Blackpool adventures, and it went on well past midnight, he talked and talked, answered questions, and even showed one of his puppetoons (on 16mm), I think he would have gone on longer, but the Dealers attending had an early start the next day, so it came to an end. I don't remember much about the Sunday convention, but the Saturday night with Ray Harryhausen still lingers 30 years on!

Great stuff!

Barry, I started going to Blackpool about 1987 (I was 16!!! Where do those years go? [Eek!] [Confused] )

I have fond memories of buying great prints from your brother and yourself when you had a table there some years later. [Smile]
