Hi, All,

I am new to the world of 8mm film and am a fan of Nicolas Winding Refn's new streaming website ( byNWR ). This site is home to restored films generally from the 1940s, 50s and 60s and I suppose a lot of them were released on 8mm. I would love to find some 8mm or super 8mm films similar to the ones on his site such as the ones listed here: ( list of titles on byNWR. When I look on Ebay for interesting 8mm films, I usually find the same sorts of Charlie Chaplain-type comedies. What would be a good place to look to find less conventional titles or ones similar to the ones on byNWR?

Basically it's the same for all of us: to be tuned into every reliable sales channel we know and just pay attention.

I find when I'm looking for something very specific outside mass-production titles, it can take years for a print to pop up. The hope then is that there aren't 80 other people also interested and the condition is good.

Special interest titles seem to come in bursts in my experience: you see nothing for months and years and all of a sudden there are three and ten in a month. To me that's a sign that someone was a collector of that specific genre and their collection is being liquidated all at once, usually along with the rest of their estate.

Thurston - In addition to keeping your eyes peeled in the super 8 / 16mm films for sale categories of this forum, there are three other ones you may want to explore.

In the USA there is The Reel Image at thereelimage.jimdo.com

In the UK we have Barry's website at bfcc.biz then click on Independent 8 - There are a stack of films listed. That is the same for Classic Home Cinema at classichomecinema.co.uk

I think that both UK sites run by Barry and Phil (both very well known to the members of the forum and both VERY reputable) deal with overseas postage. .

Failing that, there is still Ebay….. not forgetting the various sites at either .co.uk or .de or .f or even .it

The dealers will often help you if you let them know what you are looking for.

A big limiting factor is it's always been expensive to set up a run of film prints, so the more limited the market, the less likely a film is to ever make it out as a Super-8 print. Even after that, you have issues of survival, condition and availability.

(George Lucas has an entire carton of never-projected Star Wars digests, but until he needs the cash, they aren't for sale!)

-still the same: this hobby never stops surprising me, so I've learned not to say "That can't ever happen!".

Few people would have predicted we'd be doing this at all 20 years ago. (An uncle of mine predicted extinction would be complete roughly 1985.)
