Found this on ebay. Is it just me or is this hobby becoming way too expensive? Sad because I really love film but simply cannot afford the good movies anymore...

It has to do with supply and demand. An item is only worth what some one is willing to pay for it. This is the full feature. Interesting to see if it sells.

I doubt it will, not for that price ...

Of course, I have been wrong before, but my friend is right, supply and demand. Demand for this, not too hot, there's more supply than demand on this title.

Now, the STAR WARS Trilogy, high demand, therefore, high prices, (as a general rule).

Another trilogy that you don't see too often, but boy, do they go for a lot?

The Indiana Jones Trilogy on super 8 scope! I only bought "Raiders of the Lost Ark", a steal at 150.00 dollars, (because it doesn't have sound stripe, but THAT can be remedied).

I think for ID4 that is crazy. I can see Star Wars- its a part of many peoples childhood so you are in essence...reclaiming a part of your youth! Plus its a classic, etc.
But ID4? That is a nice film, not that great, entertaining but seriously not $1700 +! (To me of course). I am watching it to see if it sells at that price.
Derann....please come back!! [Frown]

Alas DFS has gone and the films with them, never to return,so any
film now has to be classed as what the antiques dealers would
tern as "a survival",and they are going to get more scarce and
prices are not coming down."Star Wars" material gets a good price
because it was a "craze"and I can't tell you the last time I viewed
my copy,it was so long ago. ID4 might just get it's price because
there aren't going to be any more.Derann did leave a legacy of
some great features on S/8 and if you look on the dealers lists
they are getting few and far between.Best of luck to the seller.

Yeah for $1,900 you would think they would include free shipping but it's local pick-up only in Germany! Does anyone know someone in Germany?

I highly miss Derann films as well.

I still have, permanently, in my hotmail, the last Derann used film list, just for nolstalgia. There will never be another Derann. There were great companies, no doubt! Red Fox, Niles, the studio companies (MGM, ect.), Ken Films ...

But there was no one that had that persevering love for Super 8 like Derann. Much loved and much missed! [Frown]

I think many of us all had the same experience. Nobody knew at that time that the labs would close and Derann would never print again, and then Derann closed themselves for good .

Some years ago at the Derann stall, Ealing, I turned down 'Predator' for £130. I already had a good copy but I wish now I grabbed that with both hands [Mad] . And many other Derann features [Mad]

I also remember turning down a 'brand new' print of wallace and gromit AGDO for £60 because it had a lab splice!! I regret that now.

Like Hugh said without Derann, these prints will not be cheap anymore on dealers lists or Ebay so we better get used to it.

What is frustating though is not knowing how many prints of titles are out there. I sure someone knows a rough figure but dont have the time to post it on the forum.

I agree Osi,but Derann lost their way when Derek died, and poor
Adrian tried, but Derek was an entrepreneur, and knew the
business inside out.I have a huge amount of their releases on
three gauges, but I think I appreciated their early stuff more than
the later,in that the stuff on 8 was Chaplin, L&H, etc then came
DFS with "Evil of Frankenstein", "City of the Dead" and"The
Flesh Eaters" my world was looking up then.Derek blazed a trail
back then, and followed it up with some great stuff in the
following years,as you chaps know.

In truth though there is probably no more than 20 copies of this feature printed. Derann features were expensive enough and wouldnt have sold in vast numbers like in the heyday of super 8 in the 70s. I would still say this is a rare title but only worth a lot if really in mint condition.

... and of course demand. I'm not sayint that it's a bad film. far from it. However, this kind of title was big when it first came out (in the theaters) and on DVD and laserdisc, ut it quickly fell to the "wayside" and so, hence the low demand.

Well if it's being shown on ELMO projectors without the additional
rollers fitted,it won't be be mint for long.

I was thinking the same thing Osi. If a film is iconic that would make sense for the high price. You are buying your childhood. A piece of history. I get it that Star Wars sells for a high price. But ID4? Its a good little film but really forgettable in many ways. In fact I clicked the link because I didn't remember what ID4 was!

Osi and Alan,

I agree with you both but being an iconic film is only part of it. For instance say that Star Wars is your absoulate favourite film ever but all the super 8 prints were very poor and have faded to pink, would you pay a lot for a super 8 print? Of course you wouldnt. But the opposite is also true because there are a lot of collectors out there (including me) that might buy a film which is not such a great film but the super 8 print is knockout and would be stunning on your GS1200 with ultra pin sharp picture and stereo sound. This is one of the reasons I purchased 'Predator' and would love to also buy 'Commando' if I could afford it. Both of these films I like (particularly predator) but neither would make my top 20 list of all time films. When I saw Predator I knew I just had to buy it (you could see the beads of sweat on their faces). I would also like to get Spiderman if the price was right for the same reason above being a top notch print.

Now on to ID4. Yes this film is overpriced a lot but the seller is trying to cash in on the rarety value. As I stated above I dont think there are too many of this title around and with Derann gone there aint gonna be anymore. Doing a quick search on the forum revealed that it IS regarded as a top scope print. No way I can afford this but someone might out there. If you was given a mint copy of ID4 but wanted to sell it, what would be your selling price?

Kinzieman (or sort of), an ebayer lives in Canada sold this very title on Nov 2011 for C$450 (US$420) via ebay.us. The print is in near mint condition. See screen shot below.

Slightly OT, but...

Talking about ridiculous prices, isn't this overpriced:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RAISE-THE-TITANIC-Derann-Super-8mm-Release-full-feature-on-2x-1200ft-/140772124637?pt=US_Film&hash=item20c6ac27dd

I like this film, I have a copy myself.
But no way I would pay this price.
I think this is starting to get out of hand.

Can we be clear on the definition of the word "mint",which means
uncirculated and brand new.A print that has been shown, is no
longer mint condition,as is a print that has been placed on larger spools.Excellent condition, but once it has been through a projector it is no longer that untouched mint print.

It will only be "out of hand" as long as people are willing to pay those high prices, but if it doesn't sell, the price goes down, and life returns to normal .... [Smile]

Personally, I think this film "Raise the Titannic" was much better as a 600ft scope digest, but that's just my opinion.

I think "Raise the Titanic" was by far a more entertaining film
than the bloated Cameron flick, whatever the critics said about
Sir Lew Grades maritime adventure,it certainly did not bore
and coming from the novel by Clive Cussler, had an Alistair
Maclean feel to it.Thoroughly entertaining, and I have the "flat"
print,so doubly entertaining in 'scope.
