John Carpenter's The Thing - Trailer

I knew of one other release for this trailer on super 8, which I believe was a sci-fi trailer reel that included a few other trailers from great films. Having seen that reel projected, I felt it was either somewhat soft and/or difficult to focus. However, that didn't stop me from buying the trailer to one of my favorite films.

At first I thought someone may have spliced it out of the previously mentioned reel. However, it appears this was actually released by Jef Films.

I had my Scope lens ready to go, only to notice that this trailer is flat! I thought that might disappoint me a little, but it didn't! It's sharp enough for my taste, and it's on Eastman LPP. The colors are accurate, and it's not too grainy. The dark scenes are well timed. Don't let the poor screenshots below fool you. The sound is loud, clear and in mono. There is however a balance stripe that one could use to convert it to stereo.

If only this had a feature, or even a digest release.

A must own trailer for the Carpenter fans... if you can find a print

Released by Jef Films
Film stock: Eastman LPP

WOW!! Great find! Great color and great to see this review!

I agree, this would have been AWESOME to have as a feature, or even a 600ft digest!

I still love that scene when they're testing the "petri dishes' and that one "acts out"!

Thank you Osi!

That scene must be one of, if not the best im the film. It's so intense!

With CHC and Reel Image putting out prints maybe there is a chance we can have this as a digest one day [Smile] I feel it would make a great scope digest. I would certainly expect that scene mentioned to make the cut!

One of my favorite films of all time. Bummed to hear it was never released.

That's three THING trailer releases, then! I have the Derann release but your screenshots look superior. I believe the one on the sci-fi trailer reel (which I don't have) has a couple of shots not on the Derann release.

Adrian,

Was the Derann release the trailer with narration? The sci-fi trailer reel and the Jef Films release are the same trailer (but Jef's is flat and missing some of the side information unfortunately). This is the trailer for Jef Films, and for the one on the sci-fi trailer reel if I recall correctly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p35JDJLa9ec

I once heard said that someone has the UFA release of "The Thing" on 3 x 400. The John Carpenter version. Anyone want to chime in if they have ever heard of this?

Someone mentioned to me a possible release as you described Alan. I wonder if it's the same source. However, I have yet to find any proof of it's existence. It would be a real treat to know it exists. Can anyone confirm?
